It may be your oil pressure transmitter switch at fault. There's many different oil pressure transmitter switches. Here are some generic images: oil pressure transmitter switch Google Search
It could also be that your vehicle is due an oil/filter change. Is your oil level ok?
It's unlikely to be your oil pump at fault.
Check your oil level
Is the vehicle due an oil/filter change?
The oil pressure transmitter switch simply tells the engine 'low oil pressure'. This usually happens at idling speed due to a faulty transmitter switch, low oil level or there's a need for an oil change as the old oil is no longer up to the job. Oil pressure switches are easily changed.
The important thing is that you aren't getting a warning light when driving at speed. If your oil level is okay and it isn't due an oil/filter change - it probably is the oil pressure switch at fault.
For your own peace of mind try adding an oil additive.
More than likely a bad oil pressure switch. However, if you have many miles on the car and did not change the oil frequently enough, you may have sludge buildup. Do not run the car with low oil pressure or you will blow the motor. It is worth the cost of assuming a bad oil pressure switch and simply replacing it.
Hello Robert, you could have a bad oil sender unit. Install an auxiliary oil pressure gauge to measure the amount of oil pressure. If reading is around 15 PSI or better at idle, change the oil sender unit.
I can think of several things to check. low on oil, oil thinned out ,change oil, oil filter blocked , oil filter relief valve stuck open, oil pressure switch faulty. Best to remove oil pressure switch and fit a oil pressure gauge to get a true reading. If OK just replace the switch.
you either have a faulty oil pressure switch or you have poor oil pressure.if you find the oil pressure switch remove it and install a manuel oil pressure guage there. then you will see if it is the actual oil pressure weak or if it is the switch.
OIL PRESSURE SWITCH ON LOWER SIDE OF ENGINE NEXT TO THE OIL FILTER.BOTH ARE ON THE SAME OIL CHANNEL IN CYLINDER BLOCK.ALL YOU HAVE DO TO REMOVE IT.IS DISCONNECT OIL PRESSURE SWITCH ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR.THEN USE A OIL PRESSURE SWITCH SOCKET WITH A RARCHET WRENCH AND EXTENSION..YOU CAN BUY SOCKET AT ANY AUTO PART STORES.REMOVE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. WHEN INSTALLING NEW ONE MAKE SURE THREADS HAS SOME KIND OF SEALER LIKE TEFLON TAPE CAN BE USED ON NEW OIL PRESSURE SWITCH IF IT DONT HAVE NO SEALER ON THREADS. WHEN YOU GET NEW ONE IN PLACE CRANK VECHICLE CHECK FOR LEAKS.
The fuel pump on that model runs through the oil pressure switch so that if the truck looses oil pressure,It kills power to the fuel pump to prevent engine damage.you need to find the cause of the low oil pressure reading(possibly a bad oil switch). That would be the cheapest place to start,or have it checked with a mechanical gauge.Good luck, ChevRev
If the oil light is on it's one of 2 things: You have no oil pressure, or the sending unit (also known as the oil pressure switch) is defective and is reading no pressure when there actually is normal pressure. You should always assume it means no pressure, because driving it this way will ruin the engine.
