I would put in a new battery.drain gas tank.i would take off valve covers.take can oiler spray oil around valve stems. lubricate them.then i would take out all spark plugs.take can oiler spray oil down the spark plug holes to help seal rings to build up compression.besure to disable the fuel system and spark ignition before cranking engine with out spark plugs.you do this to prime oil pump and lubricate cylinder walls before cranking engine.

Pull spark plugs out spray some wd 40 into the engine spark plug holes, not a lot! and then disconnect the coil wire and crank the engine over for 20 seconds or till it builds oil pressure or oil light goes out. then install the plugs and wires and put the coil back on and fire it up, also remove any old fuel trom the tank replace the fuel filter put in 5 gallons of fresh fuel buy a can of lucas stablizer fluid to add to the fuel and fire it up. Drive it for a couple of miles make its ok. Then replace the fuel filter. and change trasmisson oil.

Backed out of driveway, van would not come out of reverse. pushed to side of road. dash light stays on "R" and van will not start at all

Sounds like a possible shift linkage problem. Follow linkage back from your transmission, look for bent levers, broken or bound up pivoting connections. The neutral start switch prevents starting of engine when transmission is not in neutral or park.

I can go from park to drive without using the

Uuuh... No. There is an electrical link between the brake pedal and the transmission to prevent that from happening.
1. It keeps kids from pulling the lever out of park when they are too small to reach the pedals (first hand experience with that one back in the 60's!).
2. It keeps grownups from pulling it into gear with the engine revved up and crashing into things in parking lots and driveways.
3. Transmissions go from Park to Reverse, Neutral, then Drive. Without the brake on, there would be lots of excessive shocks to the transmission.
