You need to take to Jaguar technician to have Mil lamp codes read and cured the restricted performance is the engine protecting itself as there is a fault in the management system, usually fuel system related,It has gone into "Limp Home" mode to try to limit the damage done untill the fault is cured

SOURCE: jaguar s-type restricted performance

I had the same problem. Restricted performance and running rough at 3000 RPM. I have an OBDII code reader and found that the problem was in the air mass flow sensor, which is just after the air filter. I pulled this out and found it was dirty and had butterfly wings in it. The last shop where I had the oil changed replaced the filter for me but put in the wrong size. Close but no cigar. Bought some *** Flow Sensor cleaner at auto store and fixed the problem. Get an OBDII reader with the ability to erase the codes. Comes in real handy.

SOURCE: 2003 Jaguar S Type R 4.2L SC. Check engine light

Rent a scanner, read out any code(s), and pursue to repairs. It may be as simple as bad spark plugs and wiring, or worse, fuel problems from the injectors back to the fuel tank. A worn O2 sensor can cause improper fuel/air problems.

SOURCE: i have a restricted performance message in my

Hi is this petrol or diesel?

Most likely cause is one of 2 things, EGR valve Exhaust Gas Recycler or The air mass sensor

the EGR valve basically resends unburnt fumes back through the exhaust not dissimilar to a small turbo in its function and kind of does the same job on a smaller sacle. Quite often though they do not fail completely they just get dirty, you can remove this part your self and clean it with carb cleaner, do not use anything else but carburetter cleaner. you will notice inside the EGR is a small sensor very much like a small diode, spray this and clean the whole thing as best you can. be careful not to touch the sensor just use the spray for that part. then leave to dry naturally, shouldnt take long.

When these go or get dirty the car will feel really powerless, you might get 50 mph if your lucky maybe 70mph. they struggle on hills and you need to be in low gears all the time to get anything out of the car, also the light comes on. They cost for this model between £180 and £250 so its well worth trying to clean it first as this is most commonly the cause of failure.

the only other thing it could be would be the air mass sensor, again you can clean these but to be honest normally when these go you will have to buy a new one. unsure to clean all the connetction / wires to both parts also and ensure they have a good contact.

a new air mass sensor is under £100. if you need more info on these parts please get back to me.

Regards

Dan

WHY IS RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE LIGHT ON

Lots of things can cause this. Most likely it is due to an engine vaccumn leak from any number of gaskets. Your local dealer or mechanic can check for any faults stored in the car's computer (ECM). This will lead them to the cause of the restricted perfomance light.

Check engine light is on,display says restricted performance

Anything can cause the check engine light to go on from a loose gas cap, to a transmission issue. When the onboard computer detects an issue, it will restrict performance so as to not damage the engine any further. An Oil change won't affect this light. The only way to determine the cause of the light is to have the computer scanned with an OBD-II tool (Autozone does this for free) to determine the codes and cause for the light. You can also clear the light with the OBD-II tool, but if the problem is still there, the light will just come back on
