I have a Ford 1990 f250 xlt 7.5 When starting revs up and down slowly then dies sometimes, why?

Rough starting , will jump up and down then die, or it will idle but rev it couple times up and it will die. runs great freeway, come to a light fast and stop it dies approach slowly stays running, but might just be luck it is not Diesel replaced the fuel filter

    Fuel Pump Maybe??

  • Randy Ohler Apr 26, 2015

Fuel filter maybe. But neither the pump or filter will cause it to rev up and down.

could the battery be going bad or ? the guage says it is charged but the needle jumps around sometimes

  • Randy Ohler Apr 27, 2015

Not the battery. It would be the alternator. If the needle goes from around 14 volts down to 8 or 9 volts, Then this could cause a surge. But the surging would only happen if the voltage dropped. If the voltage stays up above 12 volts, this would be your problem.

  • Randy Ohler Apr 27, 2015

This could be the alternator, but it could be loose wires at the alternator also.

  • Randy Ohler Apr 27, 2015

Typo, If it stays above 12 volts, it wouldn't be your problem.

Clean the throttle body and idle air control motor(IAC) on the side of it. Mostly the IAC and the hole it sets in. Also check the air filter.

ok I will go try that , do I remove throttle body /Iac I know how to clean IAC not sure on body throttle Thanks for your help

  • Randy Ohler Apr 26, 2015

Remove the IAC, not the throttle. Clean it inside with a toothbrush. Especially where the plate sits on the throttle.

Dose it have crouse control.or ABS If so you could have a problem with a brake switch or shout offcrouse control switch or even what is called the park pawl switch .
At ideal see what it dose if you hit the brake a few times then touch the AT shifter don't shift it see what happens to the rpms .The IAC gets a lot of information from this as well as the TCC witch controls the transmission shifting .They rum hand in hand RPMS and shifting .

Testimonial: "It has ABS I just replaced back shoes ,drums and the wheel cylinder 2 weeks ago.I will go out and see if I can do what you mentioned thanks, BRb...."

Ok I tried that in }Park} It would not stay idled to try what you said, so I switched it to "Neutral" and it kept going, but in park it would surge{I Think} up and down then die.

  • Karin
    Karin Apr 27, 2015

but while in Neutral, I did what you said no change at all

Thanks for your help but I guess I did not fix it fast enough Tranny fluid leaking out pretty good by time I pulled into my driveway, so My issues just got bigger than my bank account. Thanks again

  • JOHN LAPIER Apr 29, 2015

Sorry to here that Karin .However the transmission was a side effect problem .You see their are lots of electrical switches between the crouse control and ABS as well as the brake switch that control send signals to the transmission to tell it how and when to shift .You say you had the brakes done 2 weeks ago .No budy is trying to lie to you here but with out seeing the vehicle and doing testing its all experance dealing with similar problems .More transmission fluid would have not repaired the problem .That transmission holds at least 10 qt's Sorry about your problem mabey you should of asked the guy who did the brakes at least he could see it and put his hands on it

1992 ford f250 no crank no power but jump starts and runs, sporadic

The positive cable will go to a starter solenoid. From there several smaller feed wires will go to the fuse box under the hood. Make sure that these cables are good. Also make sure that the fuses have a good connection .

2001 explorer sport , fuel pump? vacuum leak? 619 scan tool data provided, any suggestions/solutions

The fuel pump is suspect but I believe there's also a fuel filter inline on the underside of the drivers side chassis. Fuel works off pressure so if the filter is clogged, the pressure remains between the fuel tank and the filter. Once the fuel has siphoned off between the filter and injectors, it dies but because there's positive pressure at the fuel pump, it won't come on until the pressure slowly seeps past the clog after hours. It's worth a look!

Rough starting and idle, acting like vipor lock

Have the fault codes read. Replace faulty items. Use only
genuine items as replacement as non-genuine are not always compatible with the OEM fitted CPU units. This results in the fault codes not cancelling out.
