Back breaks no fluid - Cars & Trucks

I do not have a shop service manual ... but you may have braking challenges in general if this 1968 still has drums up front. This car was notorious for not having good braking (if all 4 wheels had drum brakes).
Anyway ... was the brake fluid real low? ... below the minimum add fluid line? If it was still in the safe zone before you added any more fluid ... then you could have several issues:

• contaminated brake fluid
• hole in brake line
• master cylinder issues

If the fluid was below the minimum .... then there is probably a leak somewhere ... and should be inspected
Does the parking brake still work? That may help you troubleshoot.

If the brakes work, then you know that fluid is moving which would indicate that the bleed screws are likely clogged and will need to be replaced. If there is not fluid moving to the back then you may have a bad master cylinder or a brake line has clogged or failed. The flexible lines that run from the hardlines to the wheel do degrade over time and can clog up and not allow brake fluid to flow.

you have to replace caliper and bleed line for air,after change.

well first of all, you have to fill the break fluid resevour, then you will need to start the vehicle so the power assist can help fill the break lines. pump the breaks a few times. you should start to feel the breaks coming back the more times you pump them. Next you need to do a visual inspection for leaks. your break fluid should not just go empty. you may need to fill the resevour more than once. hope this helps. Tim

Don't you have a puddle on the floor somewhere? If you are going through that much fluid you should see it somewhere. Maybe even leaking through the firewall and onto the floor, which would indicate the master cylinder is bad. Look under vehicle, and at every wheel you should be able to find something that is wet. If it is none of that, is the engine smoking all of a sudden? Maybe it is getting pulled out through vacuum by the brake booster? Just trying to give you something to look at.

you may need to bleed your breaks so check your fluid and have a friend help you with this.. open or take off break fluid cap and top off with fluid leave cap off and start on the back passanger side break have someone pump the break a few times and then hold down on the break pedal while you open the bleeder valve when the break pedal reaches the floor hold there and retighten the bleeder valve and repeat untill no air only fluid comes out, then move to the driverside rear wheel and repeat,next is the front passanger side wheel then finaly front driverside wheel. check fluid in master cylender after every 2 trys on each wheel to make sure pleanty of fluid is in resourvior so your not putting air in the lines.. you should see a video on this to make sure you understad it fully before attempting yourself, go to youtube videos and watch a video on how to bleed breaks almost all break systems are the same. i hope this helps.

Have some one pump the break up and hold the peddle doun to the floor and take back break line loose and see if you are getting fluid to the back. if not you need to check lines for bends and clogs. And check the resivor for clogs and fluid. If you are then change the break cylinder It has gone bad.

If you want to change break master cylinder,first remove two break pipes then remove four nuts which is holding master cylinder to breake booster.careful breake fluid from the car body and your self.

put the new breake master cylinder tight four nuts, before you fit the braeke pipes get some body who can hold breake bedel down put the breake fluide tell him to pump breake bedel when the brake master take fluid hold your fingers where you want to fit brake pipes when you feel more pressure which is pushing your finger tell him to hold the bedel down while you tighting the pipes.
you dont need to bleade the wheels. it is ready.
the ather thing when you remove the breake master put the new one then fit the brake pipes fil with the breake fluide then bump so you must bleade all wheels

I'm confused, how did U bleed the rear brakes and there's no fluid to them? first of all U need to get fluid to the rear.

1. Make sure there fluid in the brake reserve
2. leave the cap off the reserve
3. crack open the furthest bleeder valve till fluid come out (take it off if U have 2)
4. if nothing still come out, then U have a clogged brake line
5. blow back through the line from the brake side (slow till it bubbles back through the reserve
6. then gravity bleed it, tighten up the the valve
7. now U can bleed the brakes

Sounds like you have a blockage in the brake line going to the back breaks...maybe a kink in the brake line or maybe the junction piece (found attached to the bell housing in the back) that sends brake fluid to both breaks in the back is bad. Or your rear breaks need to be adjusted... I would say brake cylinders, but I doubt both would go out at the same time. Also check to make sure your master cylinder is working ok and there is no air in the line...try bleeding the back brakes to see if any fluid is getting to the brake cylinders in the back, this will tell you if you have a kink in the line or air...if it bubbles when you check (bleed the lines) then your problem is air in the line and should be bled until you get a solid flow of break fluid with no bubbles at all.
