A stick shift.
ok ill do stick shift 101..... (repaired many a box i have)
first off it can be 3 things, the stick bad. the box and the clutch.
so can you shift all gears , engine off, and parked.?
Q1: yes/no.?
if yes, can you shift to 2nd gear, parked & engine off
and then start engine and move in second gear using the clutch pedal.?
ill stop here, as most get lost , if i post the full diagnosis..... end.
we can go way beyond this. easy.
if stuck , key off, the shift forks are jammed, or if box run dry or with 200009 mile tar like lub, the forks can i fact weld to the gear dogs.
the shift rails also, has crude logic, in that it prevents 2 gears at once, but using these dentent ball locks, sometimes they can messup and lock up a gear. all this is easy fix , (not run dry box ) just rails.
if trans shifts ok, key on pocket the clutch is bad. easy huh?
i have over 1million miles on a stick and not one failed,. me, (now clutches, ive blown many, racing)
I have the same problem with my xx cherokee it's a manual and I went to store came home but when I went to turn around ir wouldent come out of first the only way I get neutral is throwing transferase in N

It could be lash in the differential which is normal, but it could also be a loose u-joint in the driveshaft. Check the rear driveshaft u-joints.

I have the Haynes repair manual 1987-2003 Jeep Wrangler with all of the schematics. Which wiring scematics do you need and maybe I can scan/email the pages, if this legal? Or can maybe answer questions you may have, keeping in mind I am NOT a mechanic but I can read plans/schematics

I had the same problem, but in first gear. What I did to free it up, with the shifter out of the transmission, looking down into the hole you will see two linkages side by side with a slot in each. The trouble is the linkage got out of sink. What you do is put a large screw driver into (shifter lever) slot and try to move them (they are hard to move) to you find neutral.

If your clutch is operating properly, the problem is inside the transmission, either shift forks or lost adjustment on rails. You may have damaged the brass synchro gears by not taking care of this right away. First though, make sure the clutch is releasing, check for internal bypassing ,leaks and slave cylinder operating properly (some slaves are part of throwout bearing and cannot be serviced unless trans is removed)
