What would cause the Emergency Brake light to not go off when the emergency light is released? What causes the ABS warning light to come on?

If the brake warning light is on then you may have a problem with the hydraulic system or a defective brake warning switch. Make sure that the emergency brake is fully released. Make sure there is enough fluid in the master cylinder.

i wonder if you mean abs light i f so loosen and re tighten .often no contact makes the abs light come on .other wise release emergency brake perhaps the peddle got pushes a couple of clicks enough to make light come on but not enough to look like it is applied.try emergency brake first push then release with handle.you wouldnt beleive how many people this happenes to .

The fuse for the ABS in a 2002 Highlander is in the black plastic covered box under the hood. If you take the fuse out, the ABS warning light and the emergency brake warning light will illuminate on your dashboard. Sounds like a short on a abs or emergency brake sensor since that would cause the brake light to be triggered also cause a sudden drop in voltage which would trigger the battery light could also be a bad ground at the battery

Hello, These warning lights are pretty accurate. Autozone, Advance, and Oreillys give free scans although the engine system and brake system can require different scanners.

Check your brake fluid level first. The ABS system requires sensors which require counting the revolutions of each wheel. Sometimes the sensors may break, but they can be blinded by dust and debris.

If you have a broken brake pad, the warning light can come on. Often the Emergency brake pad, inside the rear Rotor, can fall apart and trigger an ABS warning.

You need to inspect both the front and rear brakes or take your car to a brake shop for evaluation. Sometimes you can get a free estimate, and some shops can charge for inspecting the Emergency brakes because of the work needed to reach them.

Well most likely the brake fluid is a little low, or one of the abs wheel speed sensors is bad. Not a safety related problem exactly, but I would first make sure the brake reservoir is full, the make sure E brake is fully released. It could be that the mechanism is hanging up and causing the e brake to not be totally released. If the car free rollls when in nuetral., without the brakes grabbing and holding it back, then it could be the switch that hasn't completely switched off and is causing the light to flash ocasionally. Pull the emergency brake hanle up hard and release it quickly, to see if this makes the switch release etc.

try bleeding the system and if you went 4x4ing you may have knocked off a wheel sensor.
