Cooling fan not working

fan should be a designated relay
one fan cools the engine
other fan is for air conditioning condenser
if no better
check for 12 volts to the fans
or
you bench test both fans to see if the spin fast enough

The engine temp will go up when it is loaded like a hill climb. Also the fan only is run when needed for the engine, it is computer controlled, so unless the engine is overheating at idle you are likely just not aware of how it is operated by the computer, the engine temp will be about 230F before the engine fan is turned on.. As far as the AC blower fan goes you need to pull the fan and see if it works when 12 volts is applied with a jumper. You can run an active system test with a factory scanner and it will test the fan operation.

Unplug the coolant temperature sensor while the engine is running. This should cause the fans to turn on low then kick to high, IIRC.
Typically when the engine computer loses the signal from the coolant temp sensor, it just turns both fans on high so the engine will not overheat. Ultimately, the fan is controlled by the computer. When it receives a signal from the temp sensor that reads the appropriate temp, it turns the fan on. One easy option is to wire a switch to the cooling fan relay. Then you can turn it on and off when you need it. I would not recommend running the fan constantly. You will burn out the fan motor and you'll never get up to normal temp for your sensors.

Check for coolant level and bad motor.

However as far as the fans and "disconnecting them from the temp sensor"..... The fans DO NOT connect directly to the temp sensor. They connect to the PCM (computer). The PCM reads the coolant temp sensor, and determines when to turn on the fans. It also uses the coolant temperature to control several other functions, including the transition from "open loop" A/F ratio control to "closed loop" A/F ratio control. It uses the temp to set the idle speed on cold start. It uses the temp to determine the cold start fuel enrichment. If you run this way, your car will be hard to start, it will run excessively rich, wasting fuel, and possibly even damaging the engine by diluting the oil.

Honda used to put the temp switch to turn the fans on in the bottom left side of the radiator. Not sure if that is the case on yours, haven't worked on a Honda recently. Anyway, the switch operates a relay, not the fan directly. The fans would normally come on around 200 degrees. Also, one of the should come on when the A/C is on to move air through the condenser. Make sure the air is bled out of the cooling system,and check the fans to make sure they work,by putting 12 volts to them,check relays also.

Most systems work this way: temp sensor on engine sends a signal to the computer which in turn sends signal to blower relay that then sends signal to the fan.
Any problem along the way, and the fan won't come on.

first i would check the cooling fan relays, when the temp gauge gets anywhere between over half and overheating you should hear the relays switch(it will make a clicking sound). but do not let the car overheat! Secondly the fans are controlled by the cooling fan temp switch/sender, this is located on the radiator, and you should check to see if the fan is getting power by using a volt-meter to check for the proper 12 volts. Finally if they still do not kick on you will need to replace the cooling fan motor(s).

Please do not drive your car until you can check a few things.

To answer your question...your car is hot while sitting at a light, but not when driving because of air movement. Think of it like like this...if you are standing in front of a fan, you feel cooler. If you step away from the fan, it will be warmer.

Back to your car troubles...you most likely are low on antifreeze. Please check the radiator for how much antifreeze you have. You will want to fill the radiator to the cap. If it has been this way for a while, you will have air in the line. After running the car for a while (after the fans turn on) add more antifreeze. It will most likely will show a lower amount.

check wiring to fan for 12 volts. check wiring and see if there is a relay that can be replaced or tested. If the relay is good, and wiring has 12 volts, then either the temp sensor or fan motor brushes are shot.

If you've owned this car for a while ,you probably know the fan turn on point is very high on the gauge...about 3/4 the way up which is actually quite close to the red zone.The beauty of the gauge is when the fan does come on,it will drop to below half in a couple minutes which tells alot about the cooling system in general. If it has the ability to drop fast ,under half you have a well running cooling system for the most part. Your fan turns on via a coolant sensor signal to the control unit which then signals a relay to energize the fan. In short, you probably need this coolant sensor which is a $21 dollar part...ask for pn#21025106 at any Saturn dealer..the thermostat is connected to the block from the lower hose connector on front of engine which is held with 2 bolts...ask for pn# 21006335...install these two parts and you should be good to go......good luck
