Check fluid level --and check color and smell if not a burgundy color --looks brownish/dark reddish brown fluid burnt up also smell if has a burnt smell same ---grinding is metal on metal --possible lost reverse gear or clutch pack either way unless your a transmission rebuilder going to have to have the case cracked open
Colour of Trans Fluid is very important - If it has never been changed Then very Likely passage in Trans program board is Clogged / Plugged up ..Noise is Trans Trying to engage ..So it Goes Forward Right . Well cost of Rebuild is up to 3000 $$$ and used is 600 - 1200 $$$ + install It so Try This maybe you will get Lucky .. Add Sea Foam trans Treatment OR even Better Lucas Trans Treatment ...With this product in Place ++ Full on Dipstick Go for a Drive = 1 / 2 hour . This warms up Trans Fluid - circulates Lucas Then Try to engage Reverse ....Also Connection for Plug in to Manage Gear shift Lever is Visible on outside of Trans Housing . Look for This underneath car - Or any Loose / Hanging wires - Cracked / Frayed wires can Let in Moisture or Interrupt Ground / connection Thus no reverse . If no Luck on Above Consider Swapping in Older Style 4 speed Overdrive From Late 90 s into 2001 GMC .. They are not computer controlled Plastic gear Driven Throw away Trans . The 90 s Truck trans is made from Metal ++ much cheaper and more robust easily found at rebuild centers .. Looping of computer shift module will be necessary to Sync up to 04 Tahoe module . Any 4 wheel drive garage can make modifications ...Good Luck - remember GMC / Chevs must have Trans Fluid changed out at 100,000 - 140,000 Ks due to Heat ++ Plastic parts and Light weight Casing no longer absorbs heat .. 1 st sign of This = Fails to go into OR Hold Overdrive ...well That Applys to All General Motors products = Fluid is very important ...
I agree with Damon in the first post, have it towed to a repair shop for a decent diagnosis. Most likely something internally has broken in some way shape or form. Options are to overhaul or replace with used from re-cycle yard or a 're-manufactured" transmission if needed, or depending on the diagnosis. Good luck!

Not sure what your looking for in an answer here. If you are capable pull it out and check it out. If you are not capable take it to a shop for repair or replacement. I fear there is no easy fix for a transmission going bad. Since you say there is a bad grinding noise, it wont be a simple wire loose or vacuum line etc.
Most likely the "reaction shell" teeth are stripped. This is a common failure in the 4L60E. The transmission will need to be removed, and the reaction shell replaced. Any reputable transmission shop should be able to replace the reaction shell. They may advise you that your transmission needs to be rebuilt. Either way, it is somewhat of a costly repair.
SOURCE: '95 tahoe making noise when accelerating; sounds
no it should not spin when is in 2wd thanks
SOURCE: have a 97 tahoe when put in reverse transfer case
There is a snap ring at the back of the transfer case that breaks. It can be fixed without removing the transfer case. Remove the rear driveline and the small housing at the back of the case. The snap ring holds the bearing in place.

What kinda batteries do you got? Are the cables any good? Sounds to me like a power/ground issuse. Either that or you have to small of batteries to crank over a high compession enigne when it's cold, with the glow plugs, and heater grid pulling all of the power from the batteries.
And check the trans fluid level for your problem with the trans.
And you're gonna need to be a little more specific on the thunping noise.
