In a nutshell...Choke valve, linkage and fast idle cam must operate freely. A non-functioning idle stop solenoid (if equipped) could cause stalling or rough idle. The reason why is that it minimizes strain on starter and battery and reduces the possibility of backfiring when attempting to start the engine. Check to see if it is equipped with the above Solenoid and the other three items are in proper working order. If this doesn't help we go to the next steps.

Ok guys, let's fix these things here!
Just went through this myself, so do the following:
Go to your local parts store and buy a Haynes Repair Manual.
You need to read the book first, learn how the ECM (Electronic Control Module) works. You'll see that there are alot of sensors and components that make up the fuel emissions bologna.
The nice thing about this system is not only does the ECM control all electrical functions, it also trouble-shoots it's self. When a component or sensor goes out, the ECM stores a code for that event in it's memory. You can use the Haynes Repair Manual to put the ECM into diagnostic mode and thus read any codes present.
So, all that's left is replacing what the EMC tells you too! :) Good Luck!

you are saying it is getting spark, and fuel, right? If it is getting spark, and fuel in to the throttle body, check compression-make sure the Mass Air Flow sensor is plugged in, and double check your spark-you say you replaced all those ignition items, but do not say that you have spark.

1988 pont 6000 quit and would't restart. Generates 42 code. I have shop manual. Flow chart led to ign. module or ecm. I replaced both. The car idled for 20 min. and quit.

I don't know liter size of engine? I don't know exactly what testing you have done? I need more info?
You have dis ignition? Engine cranking, do you have spark at the plugs, proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse?
The purple wire with white tracer from ignition module to computer has a dc pulse with engine cranking? With bypass ignition, engine cranking, it's the ignition module that controls spark, during cranking rpms. Did you check voltage and ground for ignition module. With dis ignition, there is a crank sensor? I'm not saying replace anything. I would have replaced the --spark plugs and plug wires, Possibly the ignition coils.
I just don't know exactly what testing you have done?
If you have already done everything I suggested, then, pardon my post. Just trying to help.

Rough idle and loss of power 1988 s10 4.3

Did you test any of those parts before you replaced them ?
Have you checked the cap, coil, and distributor yet ?
The distributor has a module and a pickup coil inside that could be faulty.
Is the check engine light on ?

1992 Lumina Backfire - I have a 1992 Lumina Euro, 77K miles, 3.1 V-6. Under moderate to hard acceleration the engine will backfire and you can smell gas. The spark control module, coils, wires, plugs,...

I know you mentioned the EGR valve has been replaced, but you may have a bad 'new' part. I know the car is electronic, but has anyone checked its ignition timing (timing belt been looked at, I know it only has 77k on it). Is the fuel pressure regulator OK and it vacumm supply?

Ignition system and misfire codes. rough running and stalls at idle.

sounds like the ignition module.......it comes in 2 pieces, the coil assembly and the control module......you can measure with a resistance meter across the coils which should show about 7,000 ohms as an average....it will vary from different manufacturers......if you measure nothing or infinity, then the coil is open...replace only the coil assembly......if the coil assembly is fine then suspect the control module.....other than that, other faults could be intermittant crank shaft sensor signal, intermittant or broken spark plug wires.....broken or cracked spark plugs.....fouled plugs.....plugs that have excessive gaps, incorrectly installed wires...meaning incorrect firing order.....there could be many faults but i would check the coil assembly from your ignition module first before anything else...you'll probably find at least one of the 3 coils are open or infinite resistance......good luck
