I have 04 vue. Fwd 3.5. How do i change out right side cv axle? I can't free end that goes into carriage bearing?

Remove lower ball joint and remove axle nut in the center of spindle. then move the spindle out of the way separating the axle from the spindle.

I remove the strut bolts when I'm by myself. Remove the bolt(if any) to get slack in the brake line, release the plugs for the wheel sensor wires for slack. This way I can wrap my arm at the top of the spindle and pull it down, still having to hands to twist the axle out. If the axle is stuck in the bearing, put the nut back on till the nut is even with the end on the threads on the axle. Use a big hammer and knock it in/loose. Lube it also.

Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement


Removal Procedure




  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.


  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.


  3. Remove and discard the wheel drive shaft spindle nut.

    4. Notice: Hold the ball stud from turning when removing/installing the nut. The boot can become torn and damaged if the ball stud turns.


  4. Remove the outer tie rod end-to-steering knuckle nut. Do not loosen the tie rod end jam nut.

    5. Important: Do not use a wedge type tool to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.


  5. Using the SA91100C separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.


  6. Remove and discard the cotter pin from the lower ball joint stud.


  7. Remove the ball joint stud nut.


  8. Using the J 43828 separate the lower ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.


  9. Using a backup wrench on the stud, remove the nut securing the lower stabilizer bar link and disengage the link.


  10. Disengage the wheel drive shaft spindle from the wheel hub assembly. If necessary, place a wood block against the end of the wheel drive shaft spindle and tap with a hammer to aid removal.

    11. Important: Use care not to damage the joint seal when removing the wheel drive shaft.


  11. Assemble the J 45341 and the SA9173G to the wheel drive shaft inner tripot joint.

    12. Important: On vehicles equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD), the stub shaft may disengage from the power takeoff unit (PTU). If necessary, cap the opening in the PTU to prevent fluid loss.


  12. Disengage the wheel drive shaft from the transmission or power takeoff unit (PTU), if equipped.


  13. Remove the wheel drive shaft from the vehicle.

ES Lancer - vibration, dull grinding noise when turning right, even at low speeds. Intensifies as I approach 30+mph. Replaced CV Axle, Tie Rod End, Bearing, and Hub. No dice.
Turning right and having a loader noise, means the left/drivers side is bad. Turn right, more pressure on the left side. and vice versa.

ever do a CV check, FWD has CV axles, and do not last forever.
nor for life of engine. about 300k miles.
service them. or get rebuilts.
better yet , pay for diagnosis, as cars this old all have , more failures.
some are dangerous to you , family and others on the road.

Having trouble removing right front wheel bearing on my 04 vue i tried tapping, chisels, air chisel, penetrating oil nothing seems to work.
The Saturn Vue should have a bolt-on bearing with integrated wheel hub and ABS. It is held on with 3 bolts.

I assume that you got the wheel, rotor, and brake caliper off. You've removed the 3 bolts thru the knuckle to the bearing. And you have the axle nut off and the axle pushed out or at least lose from the bearing spline.

The bearing can get stuck in the aluminum knuckle pilot diameter. The galvanic corrosion between the bearing and knuckle can lock the bearing into the knuckle pretty tightly. It is not a press fit, it's just stuck. I had one GM bearing that had to be pushed out with a hydraulic press.

Keep soaking with penetrating oil and keep hitting it. Otherwise you'll need to remove the knuckle/bearing from the car and find a press.

Wining high pitch and clicking in right front wheel can the transmission be serviced?
Doesn't sound like transmission if comming from only right front side. Maybe a wheel bearing or axle , cv joint.
A little suspension work and alignment should cure it.

CV-joint (axle) but most likely the wheel bearing like mentioned. When you turn right the weight shifts to the left taking the load off the right passenger side bearing.

it should come out once you have disconnected:Brakes,strut,ball joint.tire rod end,cv joint!if it is not put the cv joint nut back on until safe enough to give it a tap with hammer to knock back & out shaft this should come as one piece HUB the bearing is pressed in! better to change whole HUB good luck this hopefully helped you out!

Removing the right intermediate axle shaft
i can only guess it is a 3.0l 4v well as far as the axle goes, the rh outer half shaft seperates at the splines on the intermediate shaft.
the intermediate shaft is the solid shaft from the trans to a bearing support bracket and ends after that. it is externally splined.
the rh axleshaft , inner cv joint, is internally splined.
to remove the rh axleshaft, remove the rh wheel and splash shield.
removed the lower balljoint pichbolt and seperate the lower balljoint front the steering knuckle. take the axle nut off and using a large brass drift or hardwood, drive the axle out of the bearing-hub assembly. DO NOT DAMAGE THE THREADS. also use some lubricant on the axle nut dissasembly. after the outer axle end is free, using the same brass drift or other, hit the inner cv joint and drive it off the intermediate shaft. inspect the splines closely because these fail and cause a no-drive condition.
then the mounint bolts for the support bearing and pull the intermedate shaft out, you will loose some fluid.

Damaged cv boot on 2002 montana fwd ( boot near wheel)
In order to properly replace a C.V. boot you need to disassemble that side of the wheel assembly and drop the C.V. axle. The new boot(from parts house or Dealership goes right back on. You will need to clean the area really well and get all grit out because this is what damages the axle itself. Repack the boot with C.V. grease and you're on your way. It can be a tough job sometimes so I recommend investing in a repair manual(like Chilton) to ease the process. The parts houses sell what I call cheater boots now and basically it is a shorter term solution. They install by basically wrapping around the old boot area and then screw together. I installed one for a customer once at her request and it lasted about 10,000 miles. When she had more money she had me put the permanent one on. I will say this about these, if you can't do the permanent repair right away for whatever reason it sure can save a C.V. axle from being destroyed - temporarily. Good Luck
