Check engine light on secondary air pump not working. works with 12 volts but is it suppose to be less then 12 volts?

Here is the Test procedure:-
1. Access the Air Injection Reaction (AIR) solid state relay, check for battery voltage on the Red/Black wire from fuse F117 and the Green/Black wire from fuse F111 and a good ground on the Black/Green wire. If OK, backprobe the Brown/Yellow wire with a jumper wire.

2. With the relay connected, ground the Brown/Yellow wire and verify that the AIR pump runs. If the pump does not run, leave the Brown/Yellow wire grounded, and check for battery voltage out of the relay on the Red/Black wire. If there is no voltage out the Red/Black wire, replace the relay. If there is battery voltage on the Black/Red wire, locate the AIR pump and verify that the Red/Yellow wire at the pump has battery voltage from the relay, and check for a good ground on the Black/Yellow wire at the pump. If battery voltage is present on the Red/Yellow wire, and the Black wire on the pump is a good ground, but the pump doesn't run, replace the AIR pump.

3. If the AIR pump runs, monitor the Oxygen (O2) sensor operation in closed loop before and after energizing the AIR pump, by grounding the AIR relay Brown/Yellow wire, to verify that both O2 sensors drop to lean readings within seconds of commanding the air pump on.

4. If neither O2 sensor signal goes lean after the AIR pump is commanded on, either the AIR pump has failed or has low output, or the AIR vacuum solenoid may have a functional (mechanical) problem that prevents it from allowing a vacuum signal to either of the switching valves. Locate the AIR vacuum solenoid and verify that it also has power on the Green/Blue wire and that the Brown/Red wire is grounded when the Brown/Yellow wire at the relay is grounded (this is the same wire). Check for good manifold vacuum into the solenoid, and check for vacuum out of the solenoid when the solenoid Brown/Red wire is grounded with the engine running. Check to make sure that the vacuum from the solenoid is reaching the AIR switching valves, and that the switching valves open when vacuum is applied. If all OK, the AIR pump is likely not pumping sufficient air.

5. If only one O2 sensor reading drops lean quickly, check for any problems with the exhaust on that side such as exhaust leaks or restrictions, or a faulty O2 sensor. Repair as needed and recheck operation. Tech tips The wire colors are different at the relay and the air pump and the diverter valve solenoid because of splices between the shared components. All others: GO to HM18.REPLACE solid state relay.HM8 to check electric AIR pump. RECONNECT solid state relay.REPAIR open circuit. RECONNECT solid state relay and fuse.HM8.DRAIN all water from hoses or REPLACE damaged parts. CAUTION: Operating the air pump in Output Test Mode for a period greater than two minutes may overheat and damage the air pump.

  • Disconnect the air hose from the air pump outlet.
  • Access Output Test Mode
  • Command the air pump ON.
  • Monitor the airflow at the air pump outlet.
  • Command the air pump OFF.
  • Is airflow present at the air pump outlet?

    12 volts. there is a relay that supplies 12 volts to the pump when closed. this relay is in the power distribution box.

    An Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump is used on this vehicle to lower tail pipe emissions on start-up. The PCM supplies a ground to the AIR pump relay, which energizes the AIR pump. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the HO2S voltages to diagnose the AIR system. During the AIR test the PCM activates the AIR pump during closed loop operation. When the AIR is activated, the PCM monitors the HO2S voltages and short term fuel trim values for both banks of the engine. If the AIR system is operating properly, the HO2S voltages should go low and the short term fuel trim should go high.

    What signals the ECU, if the seconary Air Injection system isn't working?
    H20 sensors, if running rich > Xtime throw code!
    The pump only runs when the engine is cold, so the air & rich fuel mix is burnt in the exhaust manifold, so there's less Emission.

    Obd code of p0411 on a 1999 ford mustang 3.8 v-6 what do I check to correct

    That's s failure of the secondary air pump. It'll have to be changed. It's an emissions component meant to help with cold start emissions. It won't cause engine running trouble but at inspection time you'll fail for smog. Change it before then and you'll be fine.

    Car is choking out and dying. Reads P 0411 code. How do I know if its the motor or just the solenoid valve? How can I check to narrow down what actually is causing the problem? It's on a 2000 VW jetta VR6

    Nissan patrol 2.8l no diesel to the injektors

    to test the engine correctly you will need to buy or rent a NOID test light to hook into the injector rail leads to insure the computer is sending a pulse to the injectors if there is no! pulse or signal while cranking the the ECM has gone out . if there is a pulse then check the filters for water contaminents and air locking the secondary pump needs to be checked for pressure and internal failure as well also check the fuel check valve in the main injector pump for sticking shut as well those are the most common failures to that engine also on the main pump check the voltage at the injection pump to insure there is 12 volts with the key on

    1998 328i.. Got a 1421 and 1423 code...not sure where to start...

    1997 BMW 328I 2.8L Customer Concern: MIL is on with trouble codes P1421 and P1423, for incorrect secondary airflow on both cylinder banks. Tests/Procedures: 1. Perform a functional test of the Air Injection Reaction (AIR) system. Tee a vacuum gauge into the vacuum hose attached to the diverter valve, located on the cylinder head towards the front of the engine.

    2. Allow the vehicle to sit over night. Start the engine (cold) while monitoring the amount of vacuum on the gauge at startup. At temperatures from -10 to 40 degrees Celsius, there should be at least 17 inches of vacuum. At the same time, the AIR pump should run and pump a large volume of air into the exhaust. Potential Causes: A.I.R. Pump
    Air Pump Relay
    Restricted Cylinder Head
    Diverter Valve
    Tech Tips: These codes are related to a problem detected in the Secondary Air Injection system. Scan tools with BMW software include a feature to command the AIR pump on and off. The pattern failures for these codes are the AIR pumps due to leaks in the diverter valve and moisture or condensation in the AIR pump.

    Possible fix but not all items. Just areas to look at:

    98 S70 cold start

    Milethro,

    I'm guessing your car has over 100,000 miles, right?

    Hi, I currently have a 98 V70 XC Cross Country that was throwing the secondary injector air pump code. I removed the pump (under the battery tray) and it was filled with water. This happens because the check valve sticks open and allows the exhaust water vapor to accumulate in the pump as the air pump is mounted lower than the check valve (located behind engine back by firewall)

    If you locate your air pump, just put 12 volts dc to it from the battery to see if it comes on and winds up..........it'll sound like a jet engine taking off if everything is working. Run jumper wires from the battery posts down to the air pump connector.

    I removed the pump and freed up the bearings, then drilled two small drain holes in the casing. Works fine now. Also removed the check valve and cleaned. Checked with a MityVac vacuum pump to make sure check valve diaphrapgm wasn't leaking. Okay, just dirty. Working fine now. Do a Google search on the Volvo secondary air injection pump and you will find good info on removing the pump and valve for repairs or cleaning. These air pumps are expensive, so try removing and fixing yours first. Volvo had a bad problem with water accumulating in these pumps. Most junk yards don't have any in stock due to the cost. Most have been removed by now.

    My problem now with the wagon is excessive cranking when cold. When I first try to start it, it will crank for 7-8 seconds, then start. If I immediately shut it off and try to restart it, it restarts quickly every time. Wondering if I have a fuel pressure problem? Any thoughts?

    Secondary air supply failure

    I have a 2005 Envoy with a 4.2..... Just recently the check engine light illuminated so I read the code after replacing the 20amp fuse labeled cigar. My OBDII connection had no power so if you plug your reader in and nothing check the fuse under the hood labeled "cigar"
    After pulling the code P0410 Secondary Air Injection Malfunction I checked the operation of the air pump by removing the hose connected to the solenoid. By the way the solenoid is located on the pass side of the engine top towards the back. After pulling the hose off the solenoid I started the vehicle when it was cold and after 20 seconds or so the pump should turn on and blow air out of the hose. Once I verified the pump was operating I pulled the solenoid then placing jumpers from the Positive & Negative of the battery to the pins on the solenoid. You should be able to hear the solenoid click which says its operating. But mine did nothing so I read across the pins with an Ohm meter and verified the coil was good.
    So take some good penetrating oil and fill the inside of the valve with it. You can see the plunger shaft assy in the opening and thats the area you want to fill with a good penetrating oil!!!! Let it sit for a couple of hours keeping it full of oil. The housing is aluminum and the shaft is likely to be a brass material so rust is not possible. Its caused by a buildup of carbon!! The penetrating oil will soften the carbon which in turn will free up the plunger!! MINE WORKS GREAT NOW and plus you will save around $140.00 if you were to buy it from the dealer!!! Or $80.00 aftermarket from RockAuto.com

    Check engine light comes on

    Do you hear the air pump run when you start the car? No? Check the A.I.R. pump fuse in the under hood fusebox. if it is blown then you probably need a new air pump motor. If the fuse is not blown then the relay could be the culprit. if you can hear the pump running when you start it the engine then you probably just have some wiring issues from the relay to the ecm it can still work ok but fail the resistance test that the computer runs randomly. Give some more info and I'll help you through this.

    DTC P0411/16795: SECONDARY AIR SYSTEM - INCORRECT FLOW DETECTED
    Test Requirements
    Ensure all fuses are okay, battery voltage is at least 11.5 volts, all electrical accessories are off, A/C is off.
    Ensure engine is mechanically sound.
    Test Procedure

    NOTE
    Secondary air system is activated by ECM and blows air into exhaust pipe
    upstream of catalytic converter for 100 seconds during a cold start, 41-91°F (5-
    33°C). Engine must be cold to perform following test procedure.

    1. Ensure fuse and secondary fuse (secondary fuse is 40 amp and is located in fuse holder on top of battery)
    are okay. Check hoses and components of Secondary Air Injection System, for damage, loose fit and
    improper installation, check vacuum hoses for Secondary Air Injection System. Repair as necessary.
    Erase DTC memory. Verify repair. If DTC does not reset, test is complete. Perform ECM relearn
    procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .
    2. Remove engine cover. Disconnect pressure hose from Secondary Air Pump Motor (V101), by pressing
    buttons on hose connector. See Fig. 33 . Using scan tool, check Secondary Air Pump Motor (V101) in
    scan tool Output Diagnostic Test Mode (Secondary Air Pump Relay activation mode). See OUTPUT
    DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE .
    3. Secondary Air Pump Motor (V101) should run in intervals and air should exit pump at hose connection.
    If Secondary Air Pump Motor (V101) is okay, go to step 7 . If motor runs and no air exits secondary air
    pump motor, replace faulty Secondary Air Pump Motor (V101). Erase DTC memory. Verify repair. Test
    is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE . If
    secondary air pump motor does not run, go to next step.
    4. Disconnect Secondary Air Pump Motor (V101) harness connector, install LED test light at secondary air
    pump harness connector terminals. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, activate Secondary Air Pump Motor
    (V101) in scan tool Output Diagnostic Test Mode (Secondary Air Pump Relay activation mode). See
    OUTPUT DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE . LED test light at Secondary Air Pump Motor (V101) harness
    connector should flash. If LED test light at Secondary Air Pump Motor (V101) harness connector does
    not flash, go to next step. If LED test light at Secondary Air Pump Motor (V101) harness connector
    flashes, replace faulty Secondary Air Pump Motor (V101). Erase DTC memory. Verify repair. Test is
    complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .
    5. Using DVOM check resistance of Secondary Air Pump Motor (V101) wiring. See appropriate WIRING
    DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. Resistance should
    be a maximum of 1.5 ohms for each reading. Check wiring for short circuit to one another in Secondary
    Air Pump Motor (N101) harness connector. Repair as necessary. Erase DTC memory. Verify repair. Test
    is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure.
    Secondary Air Pump Motor (N101) wiring is okay, go to next step.
    6. Check Secondary Air Pump Relay (J299) and Secondary Air Pump Relay (J299) wiring. See DTC
    P0418/16802: SECONDARY AIR PUMP RELAY (J299), MALFUNCTION . Repair or replace as
    necessary. Erase DTC memory. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See
    TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .
    7. Disconnect vacuum hose from Secondary Air Injection Valve (N112) and disconnect pressure hose from
    secondary air pump motor, press buttons on pressure hose connector to disconnect pressure hose. See Fig.
    34 . Blow lightly into disconnected pressure hose, Combi-Valve should be closed. Connect hand vacuum
    pump to disconnected vacuum hose and apply vacuum to Combi-Valve, Combi-Valve should open. If
    Combi-Valve opens when vacuum is applied, Combi-Valve is okay. Go to next step. If Combi-Valve
    does not open when vacuum is applied, replace faulty Combi-Valve. Erase DTC memory. Verify repair.
    Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .
    8. Check Secondary Air Injection Valve (N112). See DTC P0412/16796: SECONDARY AIR
    INJECTION VALVE (N112), ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION . Repair as necessary.
    Erase DTC memory. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure.
    NOTE: Do not use compressed air to check Combi-Valve.
