Check Engine Light P0740. Car stalls when starting (occasionally), and the transmission slips when stopped.

This code is set when the transmission control module detects improper voltage at the torque converter clutch. This can be caused by low tranny fluid/dirty tranny fluid/defective torque converter clutch solenoid/electrical connections to from solenoid

Did you do anything with the clutch line? What type of fluid did you use in the transmission? How does the clutch feel(really tight/stuck, to the floor/soft, normal)?

My 1998 outback had a rebuilt transmission put in at 80,000 mi.6 years later and at 150,00mi it will ''CLUNK'' and shudder coming up a grade and accelerating to a passing gear. Is it the tansmisiion or...

mcdevito75 here, In an automatic transmission the clutch--es are built into the tranny itself, they operate automatically with the servos and fluid. ------ I get the feeling it"s not your tranny, rather something regarding the engine, possibly a dirty gas filter, weak fuel pmp. Have your local repair shop check it out. It"ll be cheaper than another tranny.

The trani. slips if i start out in drive but if i manually shift it works. any ideas?

Sometimes changing the transmission filter and fluid helps to solve some tranny problems. check the fluid to see if it is dark and dirty. Check also for little pieces of metal or rubber when changing the filter. This will give you an idea if your tranny is about to give out. High volume of metal or rubber pieces means that the gears or rubber clutches are wearing out fast. Always refill with fresh fluid. I think that transmission fluid and transmission maintenance is one of the most ignored auto parts . Until it breaks down. The fluid at least should be checked every time the engine oil is changed.

1991 ToyoPU - Similar Prob- 1st and 3rd are 'difficult' to engage

It will probably be a bad bearing in the tranny. I've had it happen to me a couple of times, and found it easier to just swap the tranny with another good used one, than to tear the thing apart, and try to replace the bearing. The clutch has nothing to do with it popping out of gear. Once the bearing goes, the shaft runs on a bit of an angle, and won't stay in gear.

I think transmission went out of my 97 gmc safari just had transmission rebuilt a year ago the only thing is i still have reverse would there be anything else which would cause this?

As weird as it sounds, the oil level in an automatic transmission can cause a few weird things like this so maybe a seal wasn't put in correcly when they rebuilt and oil leaked out, causing bugs and whatnot since the tranny doesn't have enough oil to build the right pressure to operate completely. And if they rebuilt it though, they should've changed the clutch packs in the tranny, but it could happen that they forgot some, or installed wrong and they broke after a while or a host of other things, cause in some models there are 2 or 3 different clutch packs, one for reverse (but not on all models) one for the normal drive gears (gears 1 through 3) and another for the overdrive (4th). So if the clutchpack for the normal drive gears broke or is too worn out cause they forgot to change it, then it would shift in reverse since the reverse clutch pack is good, and not go into drive cause the driver packs are shot. Although I never did dismantle a safari transmission so i cannot garanty you have a seperate clutch pack for reverse or not, so ask a local mechanic that is used to working with those models if it is possible in this model or not before payin to get the tranny opened again. If it's impossible for the clutch packs to cause this and the fluid level is OK, then the problem is probably in the valve body solenoid pack, and in that case it's bad news for the tranny... valve bodies are muchos muchos money and so is the ammount the garage will charge to change it.
