It is hard to start, it seems flooded. Once it starts and idles for a little while you can rev up the engine. When you try and drive it has no acceleration and stutters and backfires. If you floor it and can get the RPM's to @ 3000 it has some power but not 100%. It will run fairly well if you can get it to 55 MPH and cut off overdrive to hold RPM's up. It did briefly run ok when I was trying to get it home but when I had to stop it started all over again when I tried to get going again. How do you check converter

Could it be your throttle sensor? If it is a carbureted engine, check the accelerator pump inside the carb.

This is because of the improper combustion, so you check the air filter, if the air filter is not good enough then the idling will go down and then the back firing will occur, in the same time check the Electronic ignition system for proper ignition cycle.

got me thinking, have you bore scope your cylinders to check for carbon build up,this will cause pre-ignition depending on how bad it is, also have you check your fuel press and volume it maybe running way to lean, hope it helps you .

It sounds like it might be runnig lean on fuel. How old is the fuel filter. Lack of fuel will cause this. Ford needs about 40 psi of pressure to run well. So it runs a lot of fuel thru the filter. It should be changed at least every 30,000 ?
