Renault 06 Laguna, I have a problem with a red warning light on dash saying apply hand brake when I get into car. Also trying the emergency EPB release worked once but car still wouldn't start and has gone back to original message. I have a plug in fault finder that I am going to find in my garage.
Maybe your handbrake is seized, try this:
With a normal handbrake, you can remove some screws around the handbrake covering. The screws are sometimes well hidden so you have to look around.
When you get the covering off, there are two adjusting nuts at the rear of the handbrake. Turn the nuts until you can get "5 clicks" on the handbrake to set the brakes.
Some jack up the car while doing this so they can rotate the wheels by hand to feel when the brakes touch the pads.
Hope this helps
I familiar with this setup, but the car should start with the parking brake on. I could see it warning you if you try to move it with brake set, or maybe even shutting off engine then, but I would never think it would prevent engine from starting. Is this a stick shift or automatic. Make sure transmission is in neutral or park, clutch depressed.
I'm sorry Doug but it is preventing us from starting it as it started fine the day before with no warning lights about handbrakes. The warning light comes on when you press the ignition button. The ignition button does nothing without the brake or clutch pedal depressed so, yes I am aware that I need to do that to start my car. The warning says, 'apply hand brake' then changes to 'Hand Brake fault' when it has tried to start and but cut off by the warning. I have now plugged in a diagnostic tool that has come up with a P2502 charging system voltage fault code. FYI, when working normally and you try to move off without releasing the handbrake, it auto releases to stop damage occuring. It is a standard feature on this model

Whenever
this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating
that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of
lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected
a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM,
SRS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must
now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and
"scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the
problem(s)
