You should not have more than 5deg on you timing. disconect the vacume when doing thischeck to make shureyour jeting on your carb is right for you set up you may be runing rich.too check that pull you spark plugs and look at the color if thay are brown your ok if black your runing rich also checkyour cam card to make shore you have the right deg set at your cam its posabel you may need a deg weel toset up your cam. as far as your over heating if you are useing the stock radeator thats you prob its to small you need to up grade some FORD radiators form the 1978 mustangs line up close to what you need

The timing of most 22r's of that era was 10 degrees b4. But, the underhood specifications sticker often reflects tune-up spec changes made in production. Sticker figures must be used if they are different from any chart or advice you become aware of.
Your cam and headers make no difference in the timing. All the cam does is make the valves open a couple of hairs more, and all the headers do is supposedly let exhaust out easier, and quicker. They aren't necessary or beneficial at all on something as small as a 22r, and in my opinion, just cause problems. (just my opinion)
