Grinding noise when backing up Jeep Liberty'06 only in the AM..

When I back out of the driveway in the morning I hear a grinding noise, like metal on metal. If I stop and pull forward it stops, then if I put in reverse again it starts making the noise once again. However it only does it first thing in the morning yet the car sits for a longer period of time while I'm at work then when I'm home, yet it doesn't do it here when I back up to leave at the end of the day.

Have your rear brakes checked. It might be a brake wear indicator. Or your rear brakes are stuck on the brake drum.

SOURCE: backing up very loud grinding like bearings

it sounds like the universal joints are going out. get them checked before its to late cause if they go out while your driving it can tear up the transmission and bend the drive shaft. I recently told a girl to change her's in her truck and she waited a couple of weeks and it broke while she was driving and it broke the end of the drive shaft off and broke the rear seal in the transmission!!! it will get exspensive very fast!

SOURCE: awd 97 ford explorer grinding noise going forward

I ran into this problem, and discovered that i had a faulty front shaft speed sensor. The grinding I had was that the transfer case clutch packs were trying to lock up and engage the front wheel drive. Replacesment of the sensor has not fully rectified the situation though, as it still does it intermittently. It seems to do it at low speed turns and on acceleration. Not sure if this is your problem or not, but it could be. A scan of the computer can tell you if it is the issue though.

2002 jeep liberty has an intermittent starting problem. The starter makes a grinding noise usually when started and has for a while. could these two be related?

the starter grinds because the bushings at each end are worn .or if the engine has been removed and replaced,, the person didnt replace the spacers from the starter and bell housing which keeps the starter gears from going too deep into the fly wheel makeing a grinding sound. the intermittent starting problem could just be the check valve on your fuel system bleeding back . need more info.

2007 jeep liberty metal on metal loud grinding noice coming from rear end when brakes are pressed. I also think that its starting to happen when driving also but don't know if I am being paranoid on that....

Sounds like you need brakes or there is a rock stuck in between the caliper and backing plate.

Seel Immediate repairs before you loose your brakes alltogether.

TAPPING NOISE, NOW IT WON'T GO INTO GEAR WITHOUT LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND ACTS LIKE TRANSMISSION WON'T ENGAGE TO DRIVE

If it is an automatic transmission, first check the fluid level. If it is low, fill it up and try it again. If the level is fine, then there is a bigger issue and you should seek a professional's help.

Transfer case grinding on my 2002 Jeep Liberty w/ 100000+ miles. Had mechanic look at it and says not too much metal in oil so he changed it. Says he bought me some time. How long can I go with this...

Once you hear grinding, that means that an internal bearing, bushing etc has failed and the gears are no longer running true. Continued use will cause metal debris to be generated that will contaminate all other bearings and cause excessive wear on the gear faces. Unless you intend to replace the entire unit, it should be repaired immediately. The more damage done, the higher the cost.

New rotors are making a grinding noise.

You did replace the pads at the same time ... right? What about the bearings ... did you pack them correctly? Everything adjusted properly and to factory recommended specs?

Some grinding is normal until the surfaces wear in ...

try shimming the starter , it sounds like it is a tiny bit to close to the flywheel and is binding, causing a tinny or metal to metal sound.
dosent sound like it needs a very thick shim .probably no more
than a thousands or two. hope this helps
