My 2000 mercury mountaineer wont start. I drove it 2 hours started and stopped a couple of times on the way normally. I turned off the car at destination for maybe 10 minutes and turned back on but the radio didnt work. Tryed to turn back on and nothing but a click sound. The radio works along with everything else like normal. There is a clicking sound in the fuse box under the hood and at the starter. Ive tried the battery, messing with the relays and hitting the starter while someone turns the key. Which relays should I replace and what else may be the problem?

Without any other diagnostics, My guess is the starter solenoid or the starter itself has failed. If you go the solenoid route, it is better to replace the starter as well. The solenoid is mounted to the starter, and to replace the solenoid, you have to remove the starter anyway, so just do both.

Have a load test done on the battery. If it checks out good, take a voltmeter to the battery and have an assistant rotate the engine. If you see more than a 2 volt drop when the car is being started, the starter is heading south.

You can try this==== take a screw driver and tap on the relay switch with the handle while somebody is turning the ignition. This is only a test, not a definate solution. If you haven't already, check the starter solonoid. My opinion, if the ignition was bad, it wouldn't even click at the relay, but without testing it's hard to say.

SOURCE: 2003 Mountaineer won't start, battery is good.

CHECK BATTERY CABLES AND FOR CORROSION,A BAD GROUND OR BAD CONNECTION WILL CREATE ENOUGH RESISTANCE TO PREVENT STARTER TO CRANK OVER ENGINE. IF BATTERY HAS 12V DOESN'T MEAN IT'S GOOD,IT COULD HAVE ON 100 CCA'S, NOT ENOUGH.

Remove the lugs at the battery. Clean the posts and the lugs - then reconnect. Your battery won't charge (and the jumpers won't work) largely because of a film on the + post and lug. If you live in a hot summer area, (Arizona) the problem is especially troublesome.

SOURCE: The battery is new. 93 4runner.

Check that both terminals on battery are clean and tight. Then ensure other end of small positive wire from battery and engine earth are clean and tight.

A bad relay or circuit breaker will cause that problem.

Did you change the actual switch at the end of the turn signal lever?

The one click might indicate a bad starter. If some one can locate the starter on the drivers side underneath. Then tap lightly on the starter with a hammer or something with a little weight while your holding the key over in the start position the starter may catch. Also check the battery connections .
