the gas converter has probably corroded inside and is not working like it should
They do not last forever so I would suggest that you take the vehicle to an accredited gas shop and have the gas section checked out.
Does it also get poor gas mileage? The cam sensor may be the problem. The common problem is the magnet in the cam falls out, the ECM puts the engine in a mode that it will run but the timing is off usually causes bad gas mileage and could cause backfire.
Backfiring occurs when uncombusted gasoline gets into the muffler. You will have to figure out if the engine is flooding and why (can be a lot of things - poor ignition, problem with fuel pressure regulator or an injector, vacuum leak, etc.). Existing trouble codes (DTCs) will help you diagnose the problem.
Backfiring in this case is caused by a lean air/fuel mixture, so I would suggest you richen up the gas supply by either increasing the pressure or the volume of gas being delivered to the engine.
AWESOME a real camaro problem. backfire. strong odor of gas because the gas isn't getting burned caused from backfire. backfiring because the spark isnt sparking when its supposed to. problems could be bad spark plug wires , bad plugs , bad ignition parts. your gonna need to check wires for bad spots, check ignition coils and stuff like that. if all that stuff is ok, then your problems have to do with inside the engine. jumped time etc.
Almost sounds like ignition problem... Hitting bump causing it to short out (turn off) for a second then restart can produce a backfire & hard to start. Bad gas (water in it) will cause backfire and hard to start. I would start with checking all plug and wire connections, putting in a good gas additive and water dryer. I your are injected I would Clean them up also... Try these out and go from there...
