Starter clicks but will not turn engine over on 2004 Dodge Durango. New starter and battery.

When you turn the key, the starter relay clicks, the starter clicks and engages, but the motor will not turn over. We can turn it over by hand. Replaced starter and battery. Has power to starter (hot wire) and power to ignition wire when the ignition is engaged. Just wont turn over!! Has done this in the past and I thought it was a weak battery. Even with jumpers directly on the starter, it will not turn motor over. Pulled new starter back off, hot wired it and it engaged no problem. Checked fuses and relays all through car and engine compartment. Lost for words!

Hi Mark
Sounds like you are doing all the right things.
We used to Load Test a Starter Motor by putting it in a Large Vice and connecting a known good battery with solid fat jumper leads.
When the solenoid throws the cog forward to engage we would use a 2 by 4 block of wood levered against the cog to try and stop the starter from spinning. The wood burns up under load but it quickly proves the Starter is functioning under load. Without using the engine.
Also you could try removing the spark plugs on the engine to allow the compression to escape. Make sure NO sparks around to ignite any fuel vapor.
The engine should spin over easily like this and you can hear & see if anything is binding up.
Hope this Helps!
Good luck!

SOURCE: wont start

There's only 2 more things that I can think of, check the fuse for the ignition, then the computor itself, you did everything else.It might be the problem and may not.

SOURCE: I have a 2003 Dodge Caravan with a 3.3L it wont

Yes they do but I would rather think you have a bad battery cabe connection to the system, sometimes the battery cable corrudes and you can't see it try replacing the cable ends and the connector ends espically if they are by the battery.

98 durango will not start good abttery and starter also starter relay is new

Hi queenshit200, I'm glad to help!

First you must make sure you have power from the ignition switch to the ASD Relay. Using a test light, turn the ignition switch to the on position and see if you have power at the relay, if the test lights up when you turn the key on and turns off when you turn the ignition off then it is OK from the ignition switch to the relay. NEXT, you must have battery power to the relay at all times, if you do then that circuit is OK. NEXT: make certain you have a good ground on the body of the vehicle and the engine. Also make sure you have a good power too power connection at the junction where the power wires meet together. If all that is OK, then you'll need to know if the Engine Controller is seeing something it doesn't like. OR it's possible the CRANK SENSOR or something else may be bringing down the BUS CIRCUIT. Unplug one thing at a time and see if it starts. If it does after unplugging that sensor or part then that's what you must replace to fix it. Hope this helps and have an awesome day.

Can the PCM be at fault for a 2004 dodge durango not starting? I attempted to start my vehicle after it had been operating fine all day and it will not crank, the gauges and all dash lights flash, the horn...

No , probably not . Do you know what a starter relay is ? It's located in the under hood fuse box ! That 30amp fuse sends B+ voltage an current to pin #30 , if you find an pull out the relay an look on the bottom you will see 4 sets of numbers 30 & 87 an 85 &86 . 30 is Battery voltage which when energized the relay will send this B+ voltage through pin 87 to the starter solenoid turning on the starter . You could take a jumper wire an jump those 2 pins an the starter should spin . Now , 85 & 86 are the control side of the relay ,Pin 86 should have B+ voltage supplied by fuse #32 10amp located in the junction block , maybe inside vehicle fuse box . Pin 85 is from the PCM , the PCM will supply a ground to this side of the control circuit if it see's a input from the park neutral safety switch . Do you know what that is ? Try shifting to neutral an see if it starts . Also if jumping pins 30 & 87 the starter doesn't spin . check the Positive battery cable using voltage drop . You may have a bad cable . Starter Voltage Drop

Dodge durango will not start at all , bought new battery ,looked at all fuses alternator is working.all i can hear is a clicking noise coming from the glove compartment

Replace the starter,it is a low geared starter ,witch has contacts, instead of brushes,if I am correct you can sometimes tap the starter while trying to start, and the starter will turn the engine over, use a hammer,do not slam the starter,it will break the magnets in the stater.

I have a starting problem problem with my 2006 dodge durango. this problem does not happen at all attempts to start but when it happens i get a clicking sound and have toget the truck boost started. i had...

It sounds like your starter solenoid (relay) is failing. The clicking is a classic symptom. It's time to have it replaced.

A starter solenoid (or starter relay) is the part of an automobile which relays a large electric current to the starter motor, which in turn sets the engine in motion .In many vehicles the solenoid also engages the starter pinion with the ring gear of the engine.

The starter solenoid receives a large electric current from the car battery and a small electric current from the ignition switch. When the ignition switch is turned on, a small electric current is sent to the starter solenoid. This causes the starter solenoid to close a pair of heavy contacts, thus relaying a large electric current to the starter motor, which in turn sets the engine in motion. The starter motor is an electric motor that initiates piston motion in a car's internal combustion engine before it can power itself.

Wont start

Start by checking the battery connections. If they seem okay then, even though it may be pretty new, I would take the battery to the dealer and have them check it for an internal short in the battery. I had this happen 2 weeks after picking up a new car.

Car engine will not crank

on the starter there is a big battery cable and a small signal. wire connect a test light to the signal wire and try to crank the engine. if the light comes on then you will need a starter. be sure you have good connections first good luck.bye the way the light should only be on when you hold the key in crank pos.if the light is on all the time you are on the wrong wire.
