Hello Tom:

You can reset the check engine light by clearing the DTC code(s) at the ECM port using a code reader; or by disconnecting the ground (negative) battery cable from the terminal post of the battery- wait 5 minutes, then, press on the brake pedal or turn on the headlights to draw any remaining (residual) voltage current out of the electrical system.

Replace the ground cable to the battery...restart the car.

Should the check engine light come back on, the problem was not just with the gas cap, you will have to use the code reader to pull the trouble codes...and based on the code(s), you will then have to perform diagnostic troubleshooting to trace and locate the component part(s) that are triggering the events. If you suspect a particular part or several parts, you will have to test them at the component level to see if it or they are operating properly or are malfunctioning.

A lot of times if you disconnect the battery for couple minutes then hook it back up it will clear your computer and the light will go off. You will have to reset the radio after.

I went to an auto parts store 'cause my check engine light and vsc light came on, on my 2006 Toyota Avalon-Touring. I bought a new gas cap a couple days ago. The light is still on.

You may have a loose hose in the evap system.
see the diagram below. The evap purge valve is on top of the engine as indicated. There should be a small diameter hose connected there. That hose runs under the car all the way to the charcoal canister, which is on top of the fuel tank. Check the hose for damage. If you can, check to see if it is connected to the canister and check the canister for damage as well.

I have a 2003 Toyota Avalon. My toyota problem is the check engine light that came on.

Hello. Welcome to FixYa. Please allow me to assist you. The Check Engine light comes on for many, many different reasons. The most common reason is the gas cap being loose. I would check the cap for being loose. If it is loose, drive the car for 10-15 miles to see if the light goes out. If the cap is not loose, you should go and take the car to someplace that can scan the car's computer to get the codes, the reason for the light being on. Autozone stores do this for free. Get us the codes, and then we can isolate your problem better.

2006 Avalon Limited with 40,500 miles. Like new. Seatbelt was closed in the driver side door and batter was drained. I charged the battery and everything seemed ok. The following fault codes are now...

Yea VSC lite will come on when ever a check engine lite is On, the codes you mentioned are certainly a EVAP codes, make sure your gas cap is a factory and inspect seal surface and contac surface on filler neck for rust clean if any, also check all hoses going into air box reconect if necesary, (have your car been in any accident) if have access to a scan tool resest lite if lite comes back no other option take it to a dealer, check for warranty coverage on this systems.
good luck

A flashing check engine light indicates a cylinder missfire. A evaporative emissions leak (the result of a bad gas cap) wouldn't cause a rough running condition. How many miles are on the vehicle?

Well, I would check the filler neck connections and the condition of the filler neck. If this is leaking there, or the tank is leaking, the loose gas cap code will show up.

Keep taking it back to the original shop until the problem is fixed. Have faith.

Vsc vsc off check engine light on 2000 toyota avalon

I just had the same issue. Cost me $40.00 to find out my gas cap wasnt clicked all the way. He also said that after the error arises, simply closing the gas until it clicked may not have removed the error code from the computer. Not sure how, but you might have to reset the computer, maybe just pull the battery?
