For the past couple of months the ABS light has been coming on seemingly randomly (it behaves like it's caused by a loose wire or possibly a fluid level). Then two days ago the BRAKE light and battery light came on at the same time, but the ABS light did not come on. The battery is brand new (less than two weeks). I took it to a mechanic yesterday, but (after sitting all day) the BRAKE / battery lights did not come on. He went ahead and tested the alternator and checked the belts and those don't seem to be any problem. Then this morning, about 30 minutes into my drive to work, they both came on again. I can't figure out what the problem is...
Sounds like a open diode in alternator, when brake and battery lights come disconnect green plug on alternator,if the lights go out you've found the problem, very common problem with subarus
yes it's most likely a alternator problem, usually the internal diode bridge breaks causing all lights you mentioned to come on,if this happens at a idle open the hood and remove green connector on alt.if lights go out you've found the problem
SOURCE: i have a subaru legacy outback, abs light comes on
one of your abs sensor is bad or the abs motor,go to local shop to diagnose which sensor, shop usually charge $ 60 to diagnose abs system, good luck, let me know ..

Well, on the way home that afternoon the car started having odd electrical problems and then flat-out died. The battery was dead, thanks to a faulty alternator. I had the alternator replaced and have had no problems since. You're probably right about the open diode; I don't know enough about alternators to know whether that means I didn't need to replace the whole alternator or not, but I only paid $200 for the part and labor so I'm not complaining. If the car had lasted long enough for me to see this response I would have tried it, but it died and I had to do something. I don't know why the 'BRAKE' light came on since it appears the only problem was with the alternator, and I don't know whether the 'ABS' light issue was related to it somehow. Thanks for the response -
