You can't There is a pin that engages to lock the steering column that is activated by the turn of the cylinder...You must remove the steering wheel ( a big task considering you have airbags) to disengage the locking mechanism and replace the cylinder...You are best to get a locksmith that deals with automobiles.. They have tools that can extract a broken key...It is far better than having the steering wheel and locking mechanism removed. (It is not cheap!()

SOURCE: 1998 Wranger Ignition Key Stuck / Steering Column Locked

I have had this same problem on 4 of my Jeeps. A locksmith provided me with two answers.
This key thing happens to me at least once a week.
It is a common problem with Jeeps. 1998 Wrangler, 2007 Cherokee and two 2000 Cherokees all had the issue.

1. Replace the tumbler assembly. $150. USD (Not!)
2. Place the key in the ignition, smartly impact the key on the **** end, end that is sticking out of the ignition. (Harder is not better) strike straight on as to not break the key off. 4 or 5 strikes should fix the problem every time.

FYI - flooding the switch with WD-40 will not fix the issue, it is a tumbler problem.

SOURCE: where is ecm box located on 99 tracer mercury

It is located under the dash, directly in front of the center floor console. The easiest way to access is to remove the console, which is very easy to figure out and do. The console is only held in place with about 6 phillips head screws

SOURCE: 2002 Ford Escape, I can't get

First, Never spray WD 40 in an ignition system, the petroleum based lubricant will allow all foreign objects such as dust and particles to stick together and cause you more problems. Secondly I worked for Ford for years in Service as Manager and in Parts as Manager as well as Parts and Service director. Ford Escapes and Ford Contours are notorious for Ignition problems. Make sure your key chain doesn't have an excess amountof clutter on it such as a lot of keys or added accesories because this adds weight to the system which is already mostly plastic. The best Lubricant to use on a key switch is a dry graphite spray lubricant that you can pick up at most auto parts. If you can't seem to get your key in or out and you need to go now then slow turn the wheel to the left and right while trying your key. The Ford Contours had numerous recalls on their ignition system. I would recommend calling your Ford Dealer and give them your Vehicle Identification number (VIN) and get them to check and see if you have a recall. This is free and the parts and labor are free as well. Hope this helps, Roger Talley, [email protected]

How to remove two pins holding ignition clyinder lock tumbler from 1994 mercury tracer

Removal & Installation

Before continuing with this procedure, make sure to have available a new steering wheel retaining bolt and two lock cylinder retaining bolts. Once removed, these parts lose their torque holding ability (or retention capability) and must not be reused.

  1. If equipped, disarm the air bag system and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel.
  3. Remove the combination switch.
  4. Unplug the wiring connector to the ignition switch.
  5. Remove the ignition and shifter interlock cable mounting bracket bolt and position the assembly to one side.
  6. Remove the four steering column bracket bolts and lower the steering column.
  7. Cut a groove in the ignition cylinder bracket bolts with a chisel and hammer or use a similar method.
  8. Using a screwdriver, remove and discard the bracket bolts.
  9. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder and bracket.

To install:

  1. Install the new ignition switch and the bracket into position on the steering column tube.
  2. Install the new lock cylinder bolts and tighten the bolts enough to hold the switch in position.
  3. Check for proper switch operation by rotating the key to each position. If necessary, reposition the lock cylinder until it operates properly.
  4. If positioned properly, tighten the retaining bolts until the bolt head shears off.
  5. Raise and position the steering column. Tighten the bracket bolts to 80-124 inch lbs. (9-14 Nm).
  6. If equipped with tilt column, remove the upper mounting bracket retaining pin.
  7. Position the interlock cable bracket. Install and tighten the retaining bolt to 35-53 inch lbs. (4-6 Nm).
  8. Attach the wiring connector to the ignition switch.
  9. Install the combination switch.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
  11. Confirm operational status of the air bag system by turning the ignition key to the RUN position and visually monitoring the air bag indicator lamp in the instrument cluster. The indicator lamp should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds and then turn OFF. If the indicator lamp does not illuminate, stays ON, or flashes at any time, a fault has been detected by the air bag diagnostic monitor.
  12. Check the steering wheel, horn and combination switch functions for proper operation.

My 1991 Mercury Tracer won't start when I turn the key. No sound at all. The lights go on and my radio works.

drop the steering column and see if the ignition switch has come apart, very common and had a recall for it. You can also call the ford dealer and give then the cars VIN and they can run it and see if any recalls are open and need to be done.
