How do I get to the blower motor on a 1984 oldsmobile toronado?

Your Buick Riviera's heater fan is powered by a blower motor, which in turn is powered by a blower motor resistor. The resistor is a small electrical component that also regulates the fan speeds of the blower motor. Like any part, the blower burns out from time to time and has to be replaced. Replacement blower motor resistors cost about $50. It will take you about 30 minutes to install a new one in your Buick Riviera.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Screwdriver
    • 1

Open the hood and disengage the negative battery cable on your Buick Riviera using your socket set. You will need a 10mm socket to loosen the battery cable bolt.

    • 2

Remove the plastic trim panel under the glove compartment on the passenger side of your Riviera.

    • 3

Loosen and remove the mounting screws that hold the blower resistor in place on your Riviera.

    • 4

Unplug the wiring harness from the old blower resistor and then remove the resistor completely.

    • 5

Plug the wiring harness into your Buick's new resistor. Also tighten the screws to hold the resistor in place.

    • 6

Reattach the negative battery cable on your Riviera and tighten it with your socket set.

1998 buick riviera

You are correct. If you remove the washer and coolant reservoir you gain quite a bit of room, but the belt routing makes it mandatory you remove the top front motor mount to install a new belt. Just support the front of the motor with a floor jack and remove the upper mounting bolts.
