Agreement with Mr. Renner. Fluid level and cleanliness inside the transmission is important to correct shifting. Fluid is not user serviceable on this transmission, if it is the 4-spd GM 4T40E or 4T45E tranmission like the one in my 2002 LW200.

According to Wikipedia the ion has a 5spd Aisin AF23 transmission if sedan and CVTi if the coupe. I am not familiar with these transmissions. The '04 Ion is drive-by-wire. Disconnecting the battery for five minutes might help. It will force the ECU to reset and relearn all the sensors.

Check your transmission fluid level. It may not be possible for the average owner to do this, as Saturn transmissions are made to he used for 100,000 miles, then serviced for another 100,000.
So they don't have a dipstick .
If you have had any leaks under it, it most likely is low .

SOURCE: replacing struts on a 2004 Saturn Ion

Firs thing is you need to get a spring compressor and working with one of these tools is dangerous. If it is not secured right the spring can expand and fly right through the car or you. after you have installed the spring compresser and locked it down. you can remove all the attaching parts to remove the strut. If you have any doubts you may be better off taking it to a tech so that the job is warranteed.

SOURCE: 2004 Saturn Ion transmission

It should be on the drivers side and it looks like the oil dipstick. Usually the top of the handle is shaped like a " T ". Most of the time it will be yellow and say trans on it. It may be lower than the oil dipstick. Good luck.

1995 Saturn SL1 Manual Transmission

Sounds like the friction surface of the clutch disc is slipping. You would have to install a new clutch (clutch disc, pressure plate, and clutch release bearing), and have the flywheel surface cut and polished back to perfect smooth by a shop.
Manual transmission gears don't slip like automatics. And lack of fluid in the transaxle or the hydraulic clutch system won't cause this either.

if noise is only when starting, consider replacing the starter. the mounting bolts could have some loose, or the clutch which disengages the starter gear is not retracting the gear. either situation could cause a loud noise of the starter gear clattering with the ring gear.
