My car, a 98 cavaier 5 speed manual transmission (stick shift), is not able to shift to reverse gear and I can only drive it with 3rd and 4th gear. This mornig I noticed the stick jumped out of 5th gear by itself while I was driving on the highway. then shortly after that i noticed the stick itself was loose while it was in neutral, more than usual. please help!!
Sounds like the shifter linkage has worn and not working properly need to lift in air and inspect the linkage
I seriously doubt that the problem is in the transmission. The linkage is at fault, a retaining clip has probably went bye-bye preventing the linkage cables from doing their job. Your best bet is a GM dealer with factory trained techs. They will have the parts on hand too.
I'd say it could be just an old worn down shifter. Mine was bad too on my 01 cavalier 5 spd. It was so bad that when I shifted to 5th it seemed like a was reaching for the glove box. I put a new short throw shifter in and problem solved.

I am driving my car with only 2 speed and it has 5 and also it would not go reverse. I hopped the problem was simple, maybe a linkage can undone or loose. Now that I read your profesional opinion about my car rpoblem I feel more troubled. It is very hard to find a garage that will do a good job on transmision.
I friend of my is currently going thru trans problems himself. He took his 01 rodeo to a trnasmission garage to have it rebuilt on February and got it back 4 days later. And since then the rodeo have been back the the same garage place 5 times for the same proble. You could see now how skepticle I oath to be to take my car to a transmission place.
Thank you for your quick response.
Trans needs to be removed and taken apart to find what's damaged...the more you drive it the more damage you will do.
my 95 corolla doesn't seem to shift into fourth gear and sounds like the rpms are really high at highway speed. please help
