It is probably the bendix not retracting the gear properly.

It could also be the ignition switch, usually when you start it the key moves back a little out of the start position, make sure this is happening. Can you hear the starter when you are in neutral and idling? If so, the gear is not returning, the solenoid is stuck or the wiring is having a problem.

go to public library and look at Haynes or Chilton auto repair manuals.
Not easy if you aren't mechanically savvy and have a good set of tools.
