My low fuel light is pn and the gas guage reads empty, but I just filled the tank. What is the problem and how can I fix it?

It appears that the float attached to the fuel tank sender assembly has sprung a leak causing it to fill with gas and lose its buoyancy. You'll need to remove the assembly and repair the float.

Was the car still running when you got gas if so when you turn it off it will and should reset itself if not there are multiple fuses for the dash and gauges go to 2001ford mustang owners manual and download it for free then go to roadside emergencies there you will find the fuse box and power distribution box fuse diagrams you can download it to your phone that way you always have it when you need it

I suggest you read the vehicle owner's handbook to be certain what the exact function of the light is. You will need to know that in order to determine whether the light is warning you or is broken.

Fuel guage sometimes read empty when there is gas in the tank?
Check that there are no holes in the float. If the fuel is getting into the float, it will give a false reading. Another thing is to check the ground on the float sensor. If it's not connected tightly, it will create a false reading too.

Just filled the gas tank in my 2006 f-350 turbo diesel super duty (6.0), started the truck and the guage showed a full tank. Drove down the road about 1/10 of a mile and the guage dropped to dead empty...
A loose connection on the sending unit could cause the problem but also moisture in the tank in cold weather could also be a factor in which i would add fuel line antifreeze to a full tank of fuel..........Hope this helps you out.

Hello 1999 chevrolet gas guage is all over the place,was on the empty mark with about 1/8 tank gas left but guage read full..Filled it up right to the brim now gauge reads empty and low warning light is on...
sounds like fuel pump is good the floater may need replacing or the wire that reads the floater may be loose

It is most likely your fuel level sending unit has gone bad. It sits inside your fuel tank to tell the fuel guage how much gas you have in the tank.

The sending unit for the gas gauge is in the fuel tank and part of the fuel pump module, it is not sold seperately. Price is around $350.00, 2 hours labor to install the part.

Gas Gauge not reading correctly
The most likely culprit is the sending unit in the tank. They are relatively easy to change, as long as you don't have much fuel in the tank. It's a mechanical unit that has a float that raises and lowers with the fuel level, however with age, the floats can develop leaks and no longer float, of the electronic portion of the unit can go bad and not register the proper level. They are replaced and an entire unit, so it doesn't matter which happened, you will need to change the fuel tank sending unit.

Fuel gauge showing empty
open circuit in the fuel level sensor. mounted in tank. as the fuel level in the tank starts to drop the arm will move past the dead spot on the sensor and the gauge will start reading again.i dont recommend diy replacement of the fuel level sender.
