What it means at the very least, repair sensor or add oil due to empty sump. Next less bad: change oil and filter. Next less bad: clogged oil pump screen, change oil pump. Next worse: leaky seals or cracks causing oil to gush out of galleries. Next worse: bearings and journals leaking due to excessive play. Next worse: spun bearing, engine poised to blow. Next worse: hole in engine from moving parts damage.
SOURCE: low oil pressure
usually that could mean a failing oil pump....or a clogged pickup in the oil pan, could also mean you have a leak somewhere. the car shutsoff because it protects itself from killn itself
SOURCE: if my low oil pressure light comes on for a sec
This is a tough question since either will give you that same signal.
I would suggest that you verify that the oil is not anywhere near low, or overfull. If the oil is at the correct level & at the full mark, you would have to suspect the sending unit.
Also, just as a check, you should make sure that the connection at the oil sending unit is in good condition. It should be on the filter mount. Clean, lightly lubricate with vaseline, di-electric grease, or just grease to seal & protect. this is in an area that picks up debris easily & even ice could work inbetween this connector.
Not knowing the history of your Impala, it would be hard to consider anything else. If you have had regular oil changes & used the same oil & type filter, that would make my investigation lean even more towards the Oil sending unit.
I've seen cars "flash" the oil light due to heavy braking on many occasions, but usually the oil is a little low.
If it was just once and your oil level is good, no noises, just keep your ear on the engine & eye on the light & Drive On.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck
SOURCE: low oil cause low oil pressure
No, the oil level nothing to do with the pressure.
If you have low pressure, check the sender unit, check the pressure with a mechanical gauge, if still low, check the pump
SOURCE: What does it mean when the message "STOP ENGINE, Oil pressure low on a 2007 impala
it means the oil pressure is low and may be low enough to damage the engine if you keep drving/running the engine. it would help if you could tell us the actual oil pressure, engine and mileage . basically, the oil pressure may be low enough to wreck your engine, then again it may be bs......
