First thing is that sometimes the dipstick goes in one way better than the others. Try turning it 90 degrees each time you try. My Toyota Lexus will only go in at one orientation.
My only other theory is that he put the transmission oil filter housing in the wrong way around. They appear to have a cut out on one corner and that may be to allow the dipstick to pass by. The housing has three bolts, but perhaps yours has two, or he though two bolts was enough or lost a bolt.
I take it that this is a diesel engine. The oil you should be using is diesel oil 20w-40 or 50 next there is blowby from the combustion process that is heating the oil in the sump and it is fuming of. If the engine is running well it is not a great problem
If when doing an oil change the oil is thick and heavy and doesn't like to run out then it is a problem as the paraffins in the oil are burning and reducing the oil to tar.and this means engine rebuild.
If it is a petrol engine then you can use diesel oil in it as the only difference is the cleansing additive in the diesel oil. It helps keep a petrol engine clean inside
either the engine breather is gummed up or their is piston ring blow back .check the engine breather pipe first as their is often a gauze filter in them on certain models of vehicles and without regular oil changes they become carbonised up
Sounds like blow-by...due to worn piston rings. (Compression that gets pushed past the rings, into the engine crankcase, and out the dip stick tube.) Make sure that a vent may not be plugged.
Hi Is it a diesel or petrol motor? If it is Diesel or petrol then black smoke is a sign that it is using excessive fuel so it could be a blocked air filter or fuel filter. if it is a diesel motor. So check these 2 items first. The low oil level light is on because the engine needs the oil topped up, if you fill it to the correct level this will make the oil level light switch off. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.
You could have a dirty air filter, if so change it. Check that your oil is just below maximum ( I normally have the oil just above 3/4 on the dip stick). Also you could add Stop Smoke to your oil to help cut down on the CO's. Also clean out all your breather pipes.
