Wont shift past 2nd

97 dodge ram 1500 slt 5.9
trans wont shift past second unless I romp on the gas and then ease off. Sometimes, no matter what I do, it wont shift.
Other times it works great. I'm thinking either something with the governor or tps. Fluid is clean and topped up and filter is new. There are no codes. 98000mi on it. Little towing, never abused. Any ideas without throwing parts it?

did you have the trans flushed and how often do you have this done//////or you might have to go to the dealer or shop and have them reset the trans/ heres a way you can try to fix it sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt you have to unhook the battery for 30mins to a hour then take it for a 30min to a hour drive like always no crazy stuff

Find your throttle valve cable attached up near cable from throttle pedal ,it's the one that runs down behind toward transmission. With engine off in park, park brake on, Have someone push gas pedal to the floor & observe that cable, to make sure it is retracting properly when pedal released. Now get under & watch where that cable attaches & watch it while doing the same with gas pedal. The lever that it attaches to should move freely & rotate one way when gas pedal pushed, and should return all the way the other way when pedal released. Sometimes that linkage or cable will get seized, and not return fully, which will hold transmission in lower gear. You can use your hand to make sure it is returning all the way if necessary, and if needed, apply penetrating spray to loosen it up, then apply something like white lithium grease to coat it after it's unseized, to prevent repeat in near future.

I'm not real familiar with that trans, but if it is shifted electronically via solenoid, you may have one that is gradually failing, i.e. not energizing. Any competent trans shop can pull the pan and check the solenoid in a few minutes. Check for a plugged pick up screen in the pan too. Does it have a heat sensor in the pan?

Check the dodge web page for recall problems on 1998,99 dodge rams. I remember something about either a grear shift pin or the gear shift linkage problem. check nthsa-national transportation highway safety administration about auto and truck recalls.also check consumer reports about your truck.

I have a 04 ram 1500 slt. The trans slips going into 2nd gear. I have a code P0652 low voltage reference circuit 2

lots of transmission problems today ...I am going to help you...?? have you had all transmission fluids ,filter changed recently ...if not do it ...first go to an autozone if you have one and have them read your sensor codes free ,,maybe you just need new shift sensors ..I would still service the oils in your transmission as well as a new module

98 dodge ram 5.2l 4x4. Trans/Idle problems.

It won't shift 1-2 or 2-3 or both unless you let off? If it is just 1-2 it might be a band adjustment, but I'll bet you have a plugged governor solenoid screen also.

2000 dodge ram 1500 slt ext cab automatic transmission shifts in first gear but takes a long time

Lack of info, does it take a long time to **** to second gear, or second gear to first, either way you have possible governor pressure issues, or 2nd gear band adjustment, whats the rest of the shits like, throttle cable adjustment, drop the trans pan and look for debris, if you need more help, more info is needed from your end. GOOD LUCK, RDJRP

1999 DODG 3500 AUTO TRANS SHIFTS TO 2ND WITH A LITTLE HELP

I have a 1999 Ram B 1500 Van, auto transmission, 5.9 L engine.
Same problem, trans hesitates in 2-3 upshift, sometimes 1-2
to 2-3 upshift. Posts trouble code P1756 - Transmission Govenor pressure too low at below 15 to 20 Psi. Transmission pump shot or valve body leak stops trans from reaching proper pressure to shift, which is minimum 15 Psi.
Either trans is leaking in valve body, valve is stuck, shift solenoid on valve body is sticking, or pump is shot.

1996 Dodge Ram Transmission shifting problem

I had the same problem with my 96 Ram 1500. I thought I was going to have to pull it out and get it rebuilt or just replace it. That was at 134,000Km it's now got 210,000 and shifting like a dream. What I did to solve the problem was this, as follows:
1. No lucas transmission Fix makes things worse.
2. Get your self a new transmission filter and gasket
3. Grab Gunk transmission medic 12oz
4. Grab 7 Liters of Valvoline ATF+4 transmission fluid (Made for chrysler transmissions)
5. Drop the trans pan and drain all the oil, clean pan and magnet
6. start truck for 5 seconds and the pump will pour out another 1 liter
7. re-install filter, gasket and pan, then add your Valvoline ATF+4
8. Add, the valvoline, transmission medic and make sure you have the right level of fluid

That solved my transmission problems, instantly it was shifting better, I no longer had to let off the gas to make it shift. Now if you have large pieces of metal on the magnet, and it's totally covered in filings, you might want to consider rebuilding the trans. My magnet had usual clutch.

Anyhow good luck, let me know if it did the trick for you.
