SOURCE: oil consumption, rattle, engine noise

Check under the hood and inspect the valve cover gasket. If it's bad it would explain why you don't see any leaks on the ground because it's probably burning off on the manifold. This ticking you're hearing is a lack of lubrication to the rocker arms. Apart from the valve cover gasket, you should get under the car and inspect the oil pan and oil filter for seepage. Best of luck on your problem.

SOURCE: Same rattle and noise

Also on these KA24-DE motors, the timing chain upper tensioners(when worn) rattle at low rpms. Sometimes even the A/C when turned on can cause it to dissipate by increased idle, or appear at switched off or vice versa!! Check if the rattling is coming from inside the LH side (drivebelt side) of the motor. If it is replace all timing chain components.....Hopefully this helps

Check your oil immediately. Tapping is indicative of either low oil level or poor oil circulation. Running the truck under either condition is hazardous to your engine.

What could the rattle be in my 2005 Grand Marquis?

Likely a loose heat shield. Trace the exhaust system from the engine to the back, check all heat shields to be tight and not bent close enough to exhaust or body to cause the rattle while running.

You need to find where the noise is coming from. On the top could be lifters, valves or low octane gas causing a ping. On the bottom could only one thing. Rod knock. The bearings for the pistons and crankshaft are worn.

Check ALL of your pulleys. Look closely at the tensioner pulleys with the belt off. If you feel any slack at all, replace it soon.

Clunking/ticking noise during acceleration in 3rd and 4th gears

This sounds on the base of it to be pre ignition, if so the moment you take the foot off the gas it goes? The cure is to retard the ignition timing slightly, have you recently changed your octane of fuel? this will also cause this?
The noise is caused by the expansion of the compressed gases expanding before the piston reaches top dead centre causing the piston to \'rattle\' left unchecked will cause permanent damage and engine failure
