I have a 2004 cavalier engine idles up and down when I'm sitting still and when I let off gas check engine light is on don't remember the code but its engine idle speed to high I think which doesn't sound right it idles at 700 to 800 rpm most of time

Some times the E.G.R. will stick half open. This will make the engine surge or have high idle. Try replaceing the E.G.R. located under the upper intake. Do not go with after market E.G.R. The spring in them are to powrefil and the E.G.R. wil not open. Also try replaceing the O2 sensors. This could give the engine more fuel thus a higher idle. Some vehicles the T.P.S. can be ajusted, do some checking to see if yours is adjustable.

I had a similar problem.  I found the filter cartridge below the pcv valve had carboned up, and after the crank case pressurized, oil was forced out the pcv supply line to the throttle body.  The idle air control valve solenoid got oil in it and caused my problem, but only when it was cold.  The pcv cartridge is accessed by removing the pcv valve and the rubber fitting that the pcv valve mounts in.  It can then be fished out with a pick set, and it is a pain because you can't see it, but you can get you hand back there.  I hope this helps you.
