TPS.....Throttle Position Sensor will normally cause this problem.....IAC....Idle Air Control sensor will also have an effect on the idling.....However I would say it is the TPS....IT is rare that both have failed but it is possible.......You should have a check engine light on...?...

If it runs good in park or at idle but is slugish when you try to accelerate it is likely a fuel issue. I would start with a new fuel filter. When you press on the gas you need more fuel pressure and if the pump cant get more through the clogged filter you will get that. If it runs bad even at idle it is likely a spark issue and needs new plugs and wires. I would give it a good tune up - oil change, spark plugs (platinum or iridium), plug wires, air filter, fuel filter, PCV Valve and see how she runs after that.

You have two coils on this engine. Test each wire for spark with the engine running. You'll find at least one wire not sparking. replace the coil that has the wire that's not sparking.

Idles fine give it gas it surges up and down like you turn key off and on

Check the spark plug wires... idle after dark... look under hood, rev it up and see if you see any spark jumping from the distributor or wires to plugs.

Check the fuel filter, may be plugged allowing only enough fuel to idle. Electric fuel pump may be shutting down, oil level full? there is a corrolation between the two I believe.

There are several problems and they are all related. Check plugs if they a white with gray ash buildup. Gap .054

1. Fuel pressure regulator, if it is ruptured fuel will be vacuumed straight into the the intake causing idle surge also in causes temperature fluctuation and poor performance. It will also cause lean running condition.
2. The Mass Airflow Sensor also has a huge impact on mixture, defective symptom was a knocking and clattering under load especially uphill. Cleaning will only give temporary fix.
3. Spark Plugs- Do not use Platinum plugs they run hotter than standard plugs!
4. Any intermittent starting problems are likely fuel pump related, when you turn the key in the ignition you should hear the pump running!!
5. Preventive maintenance is the key change your fuel filter at recommended intervals.

I have a 94 Explorer, it run very poorly after changing these items it runs great, restored power, idles great and great mileage again and finally no more temperature fluctuation.
