Question about 1999 Dodge Durango

4 Answers

I don't know if my other question posted but my baby's momma has a 1999 Dodge Durango v-8 and has been running on like no gas for weeks and ran out of gas twice like the idot she is but anyway she let it set on just about empty for like 4 or 5 days and than went out and started it up and it ran for like 5min and than just shut off on her and was cranking but it would start back up. So of course she calls me as usual when she wants something so I went over their and figured her fuel line froze up so put a torpedo heater on it, put 3 bottles of that heet let it set for a day and than put 10gal of gas in it for her and it still just cranked but wouldn't turn over, so put starting fluid in the carb and still cranking but not turning over. When turn key you can hear fuel pump so don't think that is it and also even if that was it putting the starting fluid into the car it would of stared, anyway looking other ideas

Another think is your also an idot, first why would you dump 3 bottles of heet and spray starter fluid.....sounds like maybe you might be the reason the thing won't start. Like it says above fuel filters or injectors.

There could be trapped air in the line. The fuel line would not "freeze up" unless the vehicle was left outside and there was water in the line. I agree w Terrry Hair. You could also remove the air filter on the intake and put about 2 table spoons of gas (NO MORE!) into the intake and try starting it immediately. This is dangerous. Don't try it if you feel unsafe. This technique should tell you what is going on. It is as old method but should not be used by someone who is not comfortable working w engines.

Dakotas and Durangos both have a storied history of no-start issues. If you have never replaced the crankshaft position sensor, I would start there as it is a common failure item and is fairly cheap and easy to change out.. As far as running it low on gas is concerned, that would not have caused this issue. But sometimes things just happen coincidentally.

SOURCE: car starts run's 3 seconds shuts down

Your car is equipped with a system called PASSKEY standard on all GM cars and light trucks, try the following procedure to reset the system, the battery being dead will trigger the system.

PASSKEY LOCKOUT RESET GM CARS 1999 UP
1) Put the key in the ignition and turn to the "ON" position. Leave it that way for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key and take it out. Repeat this process (2) more times (3 times, 30 minutes total) This should reset the passlock system to recognize your key.

Hey there boatright33,

A few things things immediately come to mind.

There may be a problem with the engine controller. You could check the ODBII onboard diagnostics. Auto part stores will usually do this for you at no cost.

When you pulled the ones that were/went bad, how did the filters look? Could there be particulate matter still in the tank causing them to fail.

I always put this one off until last. Check the injectors. Are they gummed up?

Let me know what you find out
Mike

SOURCE: car turns over, but won't start

Too many choice.
3 main areas are fuel, spark, air.
Try a shot of ether, if it fires at all, it is a fuel problem.
Then we can get into more detail.

First, obviously, put gas back in the tank.

Check the fuel pump fuse, (20 amp yellow fuse in the lower left corner of the group). If that is not blown, turn the key on and pound hard on the bottom of the fuel tank. The fuel lubricates the fuel pump, once it runs dry, the pump can lock up. Once the pump is immersed in fuel again, a sharp jolt will unstick it and let it pump up to pressure again. If it locks up for too long, the pump will burn out and need replaced.

We found this out by accident, got mad and pounded on the bottom of the tank and the pump jumped to life.

Will a bad pick up coil stop a 1999 dodge Durango from cranking

It wouldn't stop the engine from turning over while trying to start. But it can make engine not start or run poorly

Dodge Durango 1999 ran out of gas then it would

The running out of gas and failing to start are unrelated issues. You need to replace the ignition switch... it is easy, just watch one of several youtube videos on it.

Engine wont start

-Check spark plug. It could be too wet of gasoline it you crank so many times and not fire.
-Try this: Hole the gas pedal all the way down then start. Make sure as soon as it fire release the gas pedal immediately.

I have a 1999 dodge durango 4x4 SLT 5.9 L. It will turn but not crank. I've replaced the coil pack, spark plugs, rotor button, distrubutor cap,and sparkplug cables. I've listened to the fuel pump...

Let's get The terminology right to start out with. If the engine turns it cranks so you have a crank no start. Am I correct? Make sure you have spark. If no spark check your crank sensor located in the bell housing (transmission). Make sure you got fuel injector pulse, fuel pressure.

1999 Dodge Durango. Brake Light and the ABS Light

If you backup lights are not working as well, I would say check the fuse for the backup lights, if the fuse is good, see if you are getting power to that fuse. We had this problem and after weeks of searching and changing sensors, we found the backup light fuse was good, but not getting power. Ran a wire from that fuse to the cig. lighter fuse and all woprksf great.

Start with changing fuel filter, it may have trapped all the **** from bottom of tank, and is now plugged.
