SOURCE: idle air control valve needs replacing

If it is the IAC then buy one. once you know exactly what it looks like then it should be easy to see it connected to your throttle body. Look at the new one to find out where potential bolt holes are and now you know where they are on the car as well. If the check engine light is still on after you replace it try disconnecting your battery cables for a few minutes and it should reset your computer and turn the light off.

An idle control valve is nothing but an electical motor. Electrical motors will build up corrosion on the windings inside of them over time and will fail. Cleaning the carbon buildup off of the valve itself and the idle ports will only fix your problem if that is the problem. If you inspect it and there isn't chunky carbon to hold the valve open chances are you need to just replace the valve. However if you are just having and all around idle problem all the time check for a vacuum leak before you start getting into replacing components.

What does the idle control solenoid do ?

It automatically opens and adjusts the amount of air into the intake to control idle when the throttle valves are closed (foot peddle not pushed). Older carbureted cars used a set screw to hold the throttle valve open a little to let air in, but your Audi throttle valves close tight when you take your foot off the throttle. If the air idle control valve is not working and sticks in the closed position the engine will not idle unless you step on the gas peddle a little. I cleaned mine up by removing it from the engine and spraying carburetor cleaner through the ports until it was clean.

How to clean the throttle body and the idle air control valve

I typically remove them to clean but they can be cleaned on the car. Get throttle body cleaner from the store and spray all over. Manually open the butterfly valve and wipe after. I would take the idle air control vavle off to clean it.

change the idle air control valve.

Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve OPERATION The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve controls the engine idle speed and dashpot functions. The valve is located on the side of the throttle body. This valve allows air, determined by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and controlled by a duty cycle signal, to bypass the throttle plate in order to maintain the proper idle speed. --- REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. To remove the IAC valve, first disconnect the negative battery cable, then the IAC wire harness plug 89684p03.jpg
Next, remove the two IAC valve attaching bolts . . . 89684p04.jpg
. . . and pull the valve from the intake manifold 89684p05.jpg

  2. Disengage the wiring harness connector from the IAC valve.
  3. Remove the two retaining screws, then remove the IAC valve and discard the old gasket. To install: When installing the valve, always discard the old gasket and install it using a new one 89684p06.jpg

  4. Clean the IAC valve mounting surface on the throttle body of old gasket material.
  5. Using a new gasket, position the IAC valve on the throttle body. Install and tighten the retaining screws to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  6. Attach the wiring harness connector to the IAC valve.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

After sitting, hard to start, seems not to be getting fuel. you can spray starting fluid and it starts, must run at higher than normal idle for a few minutes, then will idle normally.

  1. Make sure the ignition key is OFF.
  2. Disconnect the air control valve.
  3. Use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance between the terminals of the valve solenoid. NOTE: Due to the diode in the solenoid, place the ohmmeter positive lead on the VPWR pin and the negative lead on the ISC pin.
  4. If the resistance is not 7–13 ohms, replace the air control valve.

How do i remove and clean the IAC

Operation

The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve adjusts the engine idle speed. The valve is located on the side of the throttle body. The valve is controlled by a duty cycle signal from the PCM and allows air to bypass the throttle plate in order to maintain the proper idle speed. Do NOT attempt to clean the IAC valve. Carburetor tune-up cleaners or any type of solvent cleaners will damage the internal components of the valve.
