I have a 2010 300c estate. the rear window defroster button/air con button/ or re cirulation button do not work. They do not light up. everything else is working fine. get hot/cold air. everything else lights up perfect. what could it be ?
i think this is a grid type(wires) rear defroster as opposed to a fan style.then when you push the button to turn on the rear defroster you should hear a click this tells you the system is working from the fuse to the rear window.what you have to do is check the rear window grid(wires) with a test light and you will probably find some of the grids not working which indicates a break in the grid line and needs repair.you start with a test light at one end and you should see it light up brightly at one end of the grid and as you move along the grid wire to the other side of the window you should see the light gradually get dimmer, when you hit a spot were the light stops working you just have to norrow down the area of the break and mark it with a marker below the grid, when you have done the complete window you will know the areas that need repair.you can buy a defroster grid repair kit and repair it.follow the directions.before checking the grid wires check the area where the car wires connect to the window at both sides of the window.sometimes there is a problem in this area.
Between the rear passenger window and the back window is a junction where rear defrost wiring and radio antenna connect. Rear defrost wiring becomes loose and burns this unit out. when looking for replacement at salvage yard everyone of them I found had burned up. Lots of La Sabres w/o working rear defrost. I made solid connections for defroster, and added an antennae, not much point in repeating a system that will fail again.
rear defrost will not work with the following reasons one the fuse could be burnt, 2 the wire going to the rear defrost could be broken, 3 there is a break in one of the lines on the rear window, 4 where the connector is to the rear defrost it could have either broke at the window or the solder let go
check your fuses first, with a test light, then if you have power there take your test light and turn on the rear defroster and probe the wires that connect to the rear defroster in the rear window.if you have power there it is a faulty defroster in the glass
the switch is protected by a fuse and it activates the relay which handles the high current needed to operaate the back window. You should have a light that comes on when the switch is turned on.
