Clean wheel speed sensors, metal from break dust collects on the magnetic side of the sensor.

SOURCE: abs kicks in at low speed and pedal pressure

You have a weak or bad ABS sensor on one of the hubs. They are built into the hub and are not individually replaceable. Also rust buildup around the sensor will cause this same problem. To stop the ABS from kicking in untill repair just pull the fuse.

SOURCE: abs brake warning light comes on and rear brakes remain stuck on

I would bypass abs contraption with new line.(87 dually) abs located under drivers side cab looks very susceptible and is known to fail.I would trust my foot before that old thing.Im rippin it out of my truck & replacing it with new line all the way back.Old lines rusted pretty bad.Better safe than sorry.unplug light bulb or just leave it in .Jersey cant say anything if its 94 or older at inspection.that goes for all the lights. For me,older is better.I dont know what setup you have or if you sold it, you could try replacing it for about 160 at advanced.I hope its not the computer screwin up,thats probably a dealer item.Try unpluging hydraulic unit for shits & giggles.Go over rear brakes again before you start cutting.

Does your speedometer work ok? There is a sensor on top of your rear differential that provides a signal to both the abs and the computer(speedometer uses the signal from the computer) This sensor goes out pretty common.

ABS CHECK LIGHT DOESNT COME ON WHEN YOU TURN KEY ON

1. I would not be concerned because if there was a failure in the ABS you would definitely get an ABS warning light and the ABS and most likely the stability control/traction control systems (with added warning lights) will all switch off .

2. You can test if the ABS is operational. On a very quiet damp surface, straight, wide road( with NO other cars around), apply your brakes hard from a very low speed - up to 20 mph ONLY driving in a straight line - until the car stops. The front brakes should attempt to lock up under hard braking and if the ABS is operational you will feel it kick in and the brake pedal will pulsate as the ABS constantly allows brake pressure and then releases it to prevent the wheels from locking up on the damp road. If the ABS does not kick in be ready to release the brake pedal quickly to allow the wheels to rotate so you can steer the car safely. Without the ABS the front wheels should begin to lock up on the damp road surface due to the low level of tire grip. ONLY test this at very low speed and ONLY when driving in a straight line on a straight section of wide road with no other vehicles around.

My abs light comes on occasionally. everything seems fine, then some times I can't stop as well as I should. It seems that the abs is kicking in & it makes ticking noises in brake pedal area. It also...

There's a service bulliten about that problem with rust build-up on the front hubs pushing the sensors out of posistion [ most common on the pickups in areas that use road salt ], it happens mostly at very low speed. The best way to find out the problem is to have the system scanned.

Uncle put new brake pads on vehicle (he worked on front and back brakes) and now the speedometer doesn't work, the abs light is on, check engine light, and the break light is on. what could have happened ....

Check for disconnected ABS sensors. The front sensors in the front are located next to the axle shafts. The rear sensor is located on the rear differential housing itself on top, in the middle. The ABS is monitored by the computer for performance. The ABS kicks on when the vehicle comes from a certain speed to a dead stop, keeping the wheels from locking up. That could be the reason for the speedometer not working. Or it could be a bad speed sensor. Both can also trigger the check engine light because it is monitored by the computer. The brake light usually comes on due to low fluid level. It can trigger the light, but not be low enough to impact brake performance. I hope this helps.

ABS under 10 mph goes off...feels like we won't stop!

Like the other person mentioned, if you have a faulty sensor or bad connection, that would trigger the light. That may also be triggering your ABS to kick in when it doesn't need to. On each wheel, there will be a sensor with some wires coming out of it located on the inside of the axle just behind the rotor. You'd have to test each sensor to determine if one or all of them are faulty.

1997 Cheverolet Suburban

I had the same problem with my 97 Suburban & replaced all the same stuff before i found out what really was wrong. it turned out to be a front wheel bearing. my abs would kick on at low speeds under 10 mph right before completly stopping. there is an electrical sensor in the wheel bearing that was malfunctioning creating the illusion the wheels were about to lock up therefore kicking on the abs. now all you have to do is figure out which wheel bearing is the source of your problems. if i were a betting man, i would stack my chips on this solution. good luck.

ABS

Sounds like a bad ABS sensor in the system. The quick fix is to locate the ABS fuse in your fuse panel, remove this fuse and abs is disabled. Your brake will function normal and it is safe to drive w/o abs until you can have it checked out, keep in mind you will lock you brakes under heavy braking conditions.

hope this helps
