My 1996 318ic driver's window randomly cycles as though the door is being opened and closed. Occasionally, it will roll itself all the way down. The randomness makes me think it is a switch problem, but which switch and how do I check it. If you've had this problem, how did you solve it?

The general module has failed. It is behind the glove box. The new module will have to be programmed. I would recommend taking it to the dealership. Allow them to diagnose it and repair it. Most likely if the problem happens again and it is raining outside, they would take responsibility for the water damage.

I had a similar problem with a '95 Olds. Turned out that the wires between the door frame and the driver's side door had broken from the constant flexing of the door opening and closing.

the problem is in the door lock and the assemble must be changed. when one looks in the catch which look the door you will see a white switch in the lock and this the defect. the switch is built in the lock.

If the " strike plate" is not adjusted properly then the light switch will not " seat" properly.
I would say it is related, check these both and please let me know what you find.

As long as it's not a mechanical malfunction, your car's position memory just needs to be reprogrammed. So, put the key in the ignition & place it in position 1 (ACC). Hold down the affected window switch for an additional five seconds after the window goes all the way down to perform a memory reset. Let this window back up, let go, pull the keys back out of the ignition, & open the door.
