My 1996 318ic driver's window randomly cycles as though the door is being opened and closed. Occasionally, it will roll itself all the way down. The randomness makes me think it is a switch problem, but which switch and how do I check it. If you've had this problem, how did you solve it?

I would look for a bad door switch or a short in power control

SOURCE: windows open simultaneously and randomly, when car is shut off

The general module has failed. It is behind the glove box. The new module will have to be programmed. I would recommend taking it to the dealership. Allow them to diagnose it and repair it. Most likely if the problem happens again and it is raining outside, they would take responsibility for the water damage.

I had a similar problem with a '95 Olds. Turned out that the wires between the door frame and the driver's side door had broken from the constant flexing of the door opening and closing.

If the " strike plate" is not adjusted properly then the light switch will not " seat" properly.
I would say it is related, check these both and please let me know what you find.

As long as it's not a mechanical malfunction, your car's position memory just needs to be reprogrammed. So, put the key in the ignition & place it in position 1 (ACC). Hold down the affected window switch for an additional five seconds after the window goes all the way down to perform a memory reset. Let this window back up, let go, pull the keys back out of the ignition, & open the door.

98 mustang the driver door window when all the way up doesn't close all the way when i shut my door. i can roll it down and up and it is closed then but when i open then close the door it doesn't seal.

It sounds as though it has slipped off it`s track or the track is damaged. It`s only made of plastic. It tends to dry and crack. Sounds like you need a window regulator and they can be ordered through parts stores. The door panel has to come off. Relatively easy to fix with the correct tools.

Driver window will not open/close

I'm thinking that the window was partially down, and your door was closed very hard. (slammed closed) This will commonly cause your window to jump out of its track. With the window out of its track, it will make the window hard to roll up, overheating your motor and causing it to thorow its safety switch, (to prevent window from busting) This will usually reset itself in 1-2 min. The window will go down easier, due to the fact the the window is helped down by the force of gravity, or it is not fully in the track at this point, so there is less friction against the window. Roll the window down as far as it will go, spread the felt weatherstripping where window seals to the door, and use a flashlight and see if you can spot the track that the window has jumped from. Sometimes you can force (but be carfull) the window back into its track, othertimes you have to remove the door panel to guide the window back in place. Your window is definatly off track or you have a very weak window motor.

Do you have global opening whre you can hold down your "Unlock" button on your remote and have all the windows open?

Look for water getting into a connector, usually in the wiring in the drivers door. Remove the door trim panel & check the connectors. report back

1998 Park Avenue Drivers window seems to twist slightly when going down, stopping the window, usually within the first inch or two. this only happens sometimes, and does not depend on weather or temp. do...

Sounds like a track problem. It happens sporadically because the track will occasionally align itself when the window is closed, allowing you to open the window normally but will work itself away fromthe door after you open it. You probably hear a strange noise when closing the window. The track needs repair. This will require opening the door panel to secure the track or replace it altogether.

Jaguar XK8 Window Problem

Same thing has happened on mine!
The solution is to reprogram the window limits. You need to sit in the car with doors shut! Turn the key in ignition in position I or II, roll down the window all the way and keep holding the switch for 5 seconds, then roll the window up and again keep the switch pressed for 5 seconds, repeat same steps for other door.
Reprogramming is also described in the owners manual. I don't know how mine became deprogrammed, should only happen if the battery is disconnected!

Driver seat all power window not rolling up

Check the appearance of the door window rubber tracks. Are they warped or distorted? If so, the motor has to work harder to raise the glass past distorted window guides. If the rubber guides are distorted in any way, they need to be replaced. If not, the motor may be weak, and it may need to be replaced.
