When I start up my car (cold),and back up,it works fine as far as engaging w/o problem&hesitation;when I put it in forward gear(drive) it drives fine as far as engaging but takes a little longer shifting gears (1st,2nd,etc.). Now,when the car's engine temperature is in normal range,it shifts(forward gears)normal (as I can hear&see rpm's drop when shifts BUT yet when I go to park and have to back up,it hesitates engaging(if not too warm on engine temperature) and sometimes loose reverse completely if engine is normal temperature. Now,should I drain the torque converter (what size allen for it?),change the transmission filter and refill with new fluid? OR adjust the modulator (does it have an accessible one on the side of the transmission?); please help as the engine has only 80k miles and wish to keep the car. Thank you, Alberto P.S. Oh,a/t fluid level is normal and smells normal.
Some vehicles were programmed to delay gear shift in order to acquire optimum coolant temp as fast as possible.
Testimonial: "forward gears shift smoothly but loose reverse when engine at warm/normal temperature."
Do not drain torque converter. Also Replace Valve Body Gasket. They do blowout, which will cause this hesitating in shifting. Also Solenoid Pack can be cleaned or replaced.. If doing it yourself check 1a auto on You Tube. Good luck

SOURCE: When transmission warms up it takes longer to shift between gears
Yes you need to have it adjusted.

I have the same problem also. Hope someone has the answer.

check and replace filter and fluids just like oil it tends to burn up and blacking and needs to be changed and flushed checking your tranny fluid it should be a red color not a dark red or with a black tint
SOURCE: I have a 1966 Ford Falcon with a C4 transmission.
I would begin by replacing the filter if its not new, 2 possibility of issue, faulty shifting module or defective transmission rebuilt. just because it has been rebuilt does not mean the individual work on it did a good job. the less cost effective way is to locate used modulator from ebay or junk yard, if that does not rectified the issue than more likely it will be the tranny. the bad part is that I dont know of a company offer a bench test for the tranny modulator.
