This is a great question and is not the same for all cars, Most cars require 75 to 100 miles. I've had older Honda Accords get through in 35 miles, and Jaguar XJ's take 95 miles. Most of them require that you drive the vehicle over 55 mph for 20 minutes. With an inexpensive hand held scanner you can check the ready/not ready status of the EGR, EVAP, and O2 system. BTW, if you unhook the battery for five minutes, it's like clearing the codes and puts everything in a not ready status until you get through the drive cycle.

I don't understand "drive cycle". You can clear the codes by unhooking the battery for 5 minutes then repowering.

Replaced starter in my 2004 GMC Yukon. I had the hot wire and the solenoid wire touching causing the vehicle to crank when battery terminal was re-attached. Put wires correct but now it won't idle.

On some vehicles, the computer has to "learn" how to run efficiently after the battery has been disconnected for a period of time. I had an 04 Cadillac that would not idle either after the battery was disconnected for several hours. I tried everything to get it to idle right, resetting the computer, etc. Once I actually drove it around the block it started running correctly after about 1/8 mile. I could not get it to "learn" until I actually drove it, letting it run in park for almost two hours was not enough, it had to go through the process of actually driving to get everything back to normal.

Had to jump start, when tried to get emission insp I was told it would have to go through drive cycle to pass what is this

Cars do have a drive cycle to clear up a fault. It more less ensures the issue has been corrected after a certain drive cycle. Some issues have to cycled for 500 miles.

Hello, have you tried to unhook the negative side of the battery for about 10 minutes and then go from there . It should reset the computer completely .

Just had the truck worked on and tried to go thru Marta inspection and it failed - they said there is a drive cycle that I need to go thru before it will pass - what is the drive cycle

Drive cycles vary by manufacturer. It can be as simple as driving at highways speeds for a certain number of miles, or it can bea number of times the vehicle is started and warmed up, then turned off to cool down. A new car dealership service department may be able to tell you what the drive cycle is for your particular vehicle. Anytime you clear the computer on your vehicle, either by using a scanner, or removing power from the computer, you must go through the designated number of drive cycles to reset the computer diagnostics. It's a lousy system, and the auto industry should be required to conform to some kind of standard for all vehicles, regardless of make and model. But, for now, it's not clear exactly what you need to do to achieve the required drive cycles. If your inspection has expired, keep the documents you received when your vehicle failed the last test, just in case you get pulled over by the police.

2002 GMC YUKON XL 1500 MOTOR DIES AFTER GOING

Check the fuel cap!! If the vacuum relief is not working it can impede the fuel flow and cause the engine to shut down or not restart after a stop. Waiting usually gives things a chance to stabalize and the engine will restsrt. When this happens again try loosening the cap and see if the engine will restart.....If it restarts immediately, REPLACE the fuel cap..Do Not leave it loose because this will cause other problems. If it is not the fuel cap the problem may be the filter, the fuel pump, or aome other fuel system malfunction.
