Pull the bulb back out and look in the plug. They get corroded and the tabs will spread apart and/ or break off. Bend them back if they are there, replace it , if not.. If it looks good, you need to use an ohm meter and check continuity of the tabs to the wire. They usually break close to the plugs.

Testimonial: "I don't have a ohm meter but the tail lights and the brake lights are the same bulb, the tail lights work until you press the brakes then just the left and the center brake lights work. I"m not a mechanic but I know my way around a car and this has got me stumped. I have checked the wiring and bulb socket and all that appears fine."

Yeah, it is the same bulb. But if you look at the bulb, it has two wires in it. One is for the tail lights, one is for the brake. Two different hot wires. the brake doesn't become hot until you push the brake pedal. But they both have the same ground wire. when the ground goes bad, usually the brake light/ it has to find a ground. usually threw the tail light. This cause a lot of resistance in the wires. It kills the tail light. So check the grounds For that side of the lights. You know your way around the car, time to learn about electricity. Meters are cheap. Get one, they come with basic instructions.

make sure the previously replaced bulb was the correct one and is installed correctly. it is a short between the tail light circuit and brake light circuit, this could even be a faulty bulb or bulb holder, the cruise will cut out if the brake light comes on, even if you dont touch the brakes

My 2004 maxima rear lights dont work but brake lights do can it be a fuse or the bulb

Could be either one. I'd start by checking the fuse, and if it is okay then checking the bulb. Both sides could have the bulb go out at the same time, but it is more likely the fuse, and the brake lights work off a different circuit. Hope this helps. Good luck :O)

2000 Nissan Maxima. Headlights work but tail lights won't come on. How do you fix the wiring of this?I have changed the bulbs and nothing. The brake, reverse, and turn signal lights work, so the bulbs...

tail lights work on a different filament than the rest of the lights you mentioned, it is possible both bulbs are burned out for that filament. if not, check the fuses as the tail light circuit in some cars is on a seperate fuse. the remaining possibility could be bad socket contacts.

Replaced tail light fuse, which turned on tail

most likely you have a short in one of the bulb connectors or the hot wire from them is pinched on medal somewhere. Or you have water intrusion shorting one out. Inspect the bulbs. Leave both bulbs out. install fuse. Press brake pedal several times and hold. Inspect fuse. if its blown its the pedal switch that's bad or a pinched wire from there. If good put one bulb in. Test again,, then the next bulb. If you see something obvious fix it.

Brake lights on 1996 maxima

you need to check the bulb first, they may be busted. if not , check the brake switch located where the brake pedal is. near the top part, so you have to look under your dashboard.
