Fit a boost gauge to the manifold to see if the turbo is actually producing boost. Fit temporarily by running the hose from the engine compartment to the cabin where you or a passenger can read the results. Turbos only produce boost under load as they need heat from the fuel to spin the turbine . If you cannot get a boost gauge then take it to a speed shop that has a chassis dyno and have it tested there . This will also test the pump for correct calibration and timing

Vauxhall mavano van lack of power in low gears pinking and white smoke going up hills

Hi

Its the EGR valve, take it off and clean it with some carb cleaner this often works rather than buying a new one, a new one is about £150 from vauxhall, its very common but do have a go at cleaning it, I got another 2 years out of mine on a astra van. EGR is exhaust gas recycler, its kinda like a little turbo, it reburns any unburnt fuel when they go wrong you loose about 70% of the total power of the van and hates climbing hills.

I would bet without any doubt that this is the fault

if you need any advice on removing it let me know, its a simple task.

Dan

Turbo is not working on my saab 9-3 td (2.2). what do you suggest? There is no smoke and the engine is running fine, just has a serious lack of power

turbo probably siezed on it , may need to get a replacement or rebuild , it may also be a vacum problem check the vacum hoses to the turbo and the waste gate

We have just put a new head in mazda bravo 2.5 td and we have just installed new thermostat and flushed radiator and it still heats up quickly on steep hills and rapidly cools back down on flat going

dear friend-it sounds like you are having a circulation problem, when the engine has reached normal working temp feel the two radiator hoses they should be the same heat, also check the water pump to see if the impeller is not loose,it is not to say that the radiator is clean after a flush,it must be opened to clean.

Hi i have a 97 ford mondeo 1.8td and it feels very under powered and i cant feel the turbo cut in atall but can hear it whistle on changing gear.can you help please?

I had a similar problem in my Mondeo 1.8 TD a few years ago and this was cured by changing the engine oil and filter to the correct type.

I had used the special Duckhams 10w-40w Turbo Diesel (or was it 15w-40w?)  oil but once I changed it to the correct Ford 5w-30w (Formula-E ) ordinary oil, the turbo worked a treat every time.( I understand now that there is an even "thinner" option that works even better so worth checking ....Something like a 1w-30w )

A strange answer I know, but true

The only reason I used the Duckhams was because the chap in Halfords said it was the best one for a Turbo Diesel

Turbo failed

usually 1 of 2 things-lack of lubrication or a foreign object in the intake.at turbo speeds, the smallest object will wreak havoc.
