It most certainly will especially sitting at lights. high engine rpms and slow speed or loaded . If the engine cools down as soon as there is air flowing through the radiator then the hub will be faulty. If the fan is not making a roaring noise when hot ,the hub is faulty.

SOURCE: overheating..

check the radiator hoses, you might have one that is squeezing in when the pressure builds, with the car running check your upper and lower hoses to make sure they are not pinching anywhere... also you should make sure that the hoses have no build up in them blocking anything.... hope this helps you out

Overheating and antifreeze coming from cap, but fan to cool it down, is barely turning what could cause this.

Could be a faulty fan motor, or fan relay.
You should be able to run a wire from battery power to the fan to make it run at full speed to test.

How does a heater cause overheating?

Here's a thought. If you use the a/c it turns on a radiator fan. If you changed it over to heat the a/c fan shuts off. So if the cooling fan was broke all a long then you wouldn't notice until you turned the heat on. How did I think this up. I owned a Ford once.

LOSING ENGINE POWER WHILE DRIVING

Check your temp gauge, make sure it is not overheating. I am not sure if the '78 was fitted with a ECM, but if it was, then anything that poses a threat to the engine is picked up by the ECM which puts the vehicle in limp mode. This means that the computer actually cuts engine power so that you can limp to the nearest garage to fix the problem and minimise damage to the engine.
However, '78??? I'm not sure I'm in the ballpark with this. Still, make sure it not overheating.

Adjust ignition timing colt rodeo 4x4 3l V6 1996

make sure that your cooling system has no leaks, a common cause of overheating. if there is no leaks , check your ignition timing with a strob, you might want to advance or retard the timing a bit. bad timing also causes overheating

Fans to the radiator are not working which causes overheating what is causing that

possable problem with your model of car could be the fan temp sensor on the engine , or other problem could be a fuse or fusable link wire , or burned out fan motor itself
