All of the previous answers are possible. WD-40 the latch assembly, and make sure that the latch returns with spring tension. I have frequently seen twigs and other debris packed in the lock by birds. The cables can also be frozen or as the other Expert said, the mounts could have slipped and the cable is not pulling the release far enough.

Or your latch is bent. their is a primary latch and a secondary latch. the primary is what hold the hood closed tight. secondary is when you pop the hood but it still holds it until you pull the release. if the hood wont latch at all, most likely it is off center or bent. if bolts come loose from the latch that hold it to the crossmember bar, it could allow it to move and wont line up so the hood to close. Also there are adjustments on the hood hinges that could be wore out allowing the hood to move forward as you close it and it is not allowing it to latch. hope this helps

I can't get the hood to latch down tight after I open it. When I pull the cable lever, it stays out and won't return. Is this a problem with the cable, or the hood latch itself? And what should I do to try...

Soak the latch and the cable end with WD-40. Move the latch by hand with a screwdriver until it latches. Then open and close the hood about 20 times until the latch moves freely. Once it's freed up, shoot it with spray white lithium grease. Then repeat the open/close procedure. That'll prevent it from rusting again.

Safety catch on hood wont release and hood wont re latch!

I would check to see if the hood release moves when the inside lever is pulled then pushed, if not the cable and latch mechanism may need lubrication or be broken.

How do I close a 1996 Hood on a TBird when it won't shut?

Close the latch with the hood open to make sure it works. If it does make sure the hood release handle,is in all the way and adjust the latch assembly

Can't close hood on 2007 Subaru forester

Try pulling the latch lever again. Sometimes, when the hood alignment isn't quite right, the latch will lock before the hood end gets in the right place. Otherwise your hood latch is misaligned or your cable is rusted and has the latch stuck open.

Trunk pop open when driving

close hood and lift up on hood to see if it stays closed.
if not, check inside car to see if latch(that you pull) is in the correct position. you can tell when hood is closed that there will be some tension on latch.
check under hood, where hood closes on latch of hood, is tight and secure(no loose bolts)
also check cable if broken.
only those things can cause hood to pop open.
if all visual inspections check out and still continues to open while driving then the latch (the mechanism that hold the hood down) is bad. vibrating while driving will cause it to open.

Where is the latch for opening the hood ?

The red release latch is down under the dash on the extreme left hand side. A release tongue should stick out from the radiator grill when the latch is opened. Pulling on this tongue will release the hood When you open the hood the angle is initially restricted to about 45 degrees which is fine for minor jobs. If you need extra room, the left hand hinge has a latch pin which can be swung inwards to allow the hood to move up to about 50 degrees. Releasing the second latch pin on the right hand hinge allows the hood to go vertical. You will have to release the left hand hinge latch pin to close the hood.

Hood release problem

Hi JP,

Unfortunately no. There are two things to try though.

If when you pull the release it feels as though the latch is releasing (without the hood rising), try pushing the hood down (relatching), giving it a sharp rap right above the latch or prying the hood up.

If when you pull the release nothing happens:
Get a flashlight and a long set of needlenose pliers.
Look through the front grill and locate the latch. You should be able to find the release cable. Grab it with the needle nose and pull it away from the latch. You'll hear it release.

Be patient, you'll get it.
