Good answers. Personally I don't think the door switches are the problem, it sounds more like the headlight switch. I guess that you are aware that the dome light works off the headlight switch (or rather, it did when I last worked on a Mustang). Turning the switch to full anticlock would turn on the dome light, turning it the other way would turn up the dash lights. A bad switch could give you grey hairs (like mine).
If you have a light control module then that is probably failing. However if the dome light is activated by small switches in the door pillars it is possible that the contact points may be rusty or have a bad earth.
Ok thank
yes --ford did have the dome light control in the headlight switch --a fancy way of making the light brighter or dimmer depending on the mood. However to get the light to work the current still had to go through the the dimmer resistor part of the light switch through the bulb to the switch in the door pillar. Ford light switches were very badly desogned and burnt out on a regular basis because all the current passed through the switch to the lights . A fix here was to install relays for the lights and the switch lasted a long time.
Thanks how do you install relays so this doesnt happen again
get 2 off 12volt relays that have 4 /5 ins at the base get 2 inline fuse oilders
get 4 off 12volt relays and 2 inline fuse holders
Add a Comment Run new wires from the +terminal of the battery through a fuse to the contact pin of the relay pull the wire to the high beam and connect it to the coil pin of the relay. from the other coil pin of the relay run an earth wire. run a wire from the other contact pin to the head light high beam pin on the bulb. The operation is now ---when you turn on the headlights to high beam the power flows from the switch and energises the relay to earth which closes the relay contacts and power is then drawn directly from the battery to the high beam light. Repeat the installation for 4 lights ( 2 low beams and 2 high beams). I did this for a ford falcon with dull lights and was able to upgrade from the standard 55/65wat H4 bulbs to 125/100 bulbs. As all the power is directly from the battery to the lights there is no load on the wiring if you make it heavy enough and the power that flows through the switch is about 5 watts
Driving in the territory the lights for the falcon negated the beed for driving/bull lights as the biggeg bulbs were more than adequate Just be careful as some reflectors are only plastic and do not go well from the heat from the bigger bulbs.
Thanks that help my headlights are really dim even on bright

Your dimmer switch possibly. When my dimmer switch started going bad all sorts of weird electrical issues I.E. dome light, rear brake lights, turn signals and headlights turning on and off randomly. I replaced switch and the issue disappeared. Upon doing a small amount of research I relized ford has had issues with these switches in stangs for many years in the 80's and 90's. Hope this helps you Ryan MN
Thanks ill look into that one
Do you have a u pull your own boneyard/junkyard in your area? If so grab a dimmer switch out of a 94-97 or maybe 98 Stang put it in yours worth a try sure the yard won't charge you more than $10 max. Otherwise a new oem switch from latemodel resto or american muscle is around $100.00.
Yes i have one thanks ill do that
I put in a headlight switch how could it be the dimmer switch that works thanks for the help

That would be my first guess as you can turn on the dome light with the light switch anyway. I would change the light switch its easy and does not cost that much. Also as Bill stated you do have a switch on the door jam all autos have them you can replace that also.

This weekend, I had the exact same problem. I took my Durango to the dealer, and it was the Central electroniic t Module (computer). The part was $185 but hte labor was over $ 250. Besides the headlights and the door locks not working, it also turned on my "server 4wd", once this module was replaced, everything is fine.

Check fuse 8 (10 amp fuse) in the under dash fuse panel. Make sure you have voltage to it on both sides of the fuse. This fuse feeds all of the items you listed.

there was a recall on the headlight switch up to 06 camrys, find out if your car is affected by calling Toyota with the chassis no,and month of build

Try the multi function switch on the steering colum The one that runs the turn signals, dims the headlights and turns on the wipers. pull it back like you are gonna turn the brights on and hold it and have someone else see if the headlights are on while you are holding it. if so that is your problem change the switch. Also when these go bad there is normally a light burning wire type of smell. Hope this helps
