On most front wheel drive vehicles, the front axles have what's called a CV joint on each side. These will go bad, indicated by the clicking noise you hear. This is usually due to the protective boot being torn and allowing the grease to be compromised by dirt and grime. It will not get better. It can get worse until such a time as the bearings fail and lock up.
How long it will last is anyone's guess, depending on the driving conditions. But I've driven quite a few miles on one with the worst consequence being the clicking noise.
The axles are completely replaceable, and this is a common maintenance item on front-wheel drive vehicles like yours.
Now that they're clicking, don't try to just replace the boots themselves...the damage is most likely already done.

do you hear a clicking sound when you turn the steering wheel? the controls on the steering wheel all go through a "clockspring assembly". it is like a tape measure that rolls out when you turn one direction and rolls in when you turn the other. the tape or ribbon seems to be broken and can make a clicking noise when you turn the wheel. the plugs not working may just be a fuse blown from possible overload on the circuit.

iF YOUR PONTIAC HAS ELECTRIC OR ELECTRIC ASSIST STEERING, THEN IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE MISSING TEETH/DAMAGED GEAR INSIDE THE ELECTRICAL STEERING ASSEMBLY. THIS WOULD CAUSE THE NOISE AND THE OFF CENTER STEERING CONCERN.

if you turn headlights on and turn key to start do you hear clicking? if so starter is possibly bad, lets trouble shoot your problem.suggest you check the fuses under hood in black box, make sure those are good. when you turn the key, you should hear at least a click or else the starter is not drawing current.try turning the headlights on and at same time turn the key and try to start, if lights go dim the starter is drawing current, does it click? if so then bad starter. if no noise at all,,still could be a bad starter.suggest that you remove the starter and have it checked out.also make sure the car is in park for sure before you do any of this. hope this helps!!
