What are the problems of a faulty transmission speed sensor in a 2002 land rover discovery 2 v gas?

We are currently trying to find the problem. the gears in the transmission do not engage when the vehicle is started. the engine has to be revved for the gears to engage. after the vehicle runs for a while the gears start to work smoothly. no engine problems

Run the fault codes and look for a faulty torque converter clutch solenoid /servo and a problem TCM unit. A service if not done in the last 60.000 miles would also help.

SOURCE: 2002 Land Rover Discovery starts but idles rough.

BAD spark! check plugs wires and coil packs. the wires are a real pain to replace because of the location of the coil packs between the intake manifold and firewall.

SOURCE: 2002 Land Rover Discovery rolls when it is in PARK.

It is known as the Parking Pawl assembly, and requires removal of the gearbox from the vehicle along with the transfer box. You then remove the extension housing (requiring new bolts) and then replace the park lock gear and o'ring.

SOURCE: Suggested Solution 2002 Land Rover Discovery Series II Logo Problem with 2002 Discovery Series II Starts fine when cold, after running dies on idle then wont start 2002 land rover discovery, starts

The ignition system is controlled by the ECM. Check power at fuse box in on right side under dash. Check fuses right side engine compartmentlower dash panel if all OK check power to ECM located right side "A" pillar in alloy box. this unit could be faulty if no spark at coils, assuming they have been connected correctly. may have to get tested for codes at L/R dealer or someone with test tool. Another source of problem may well be flat battery in transponder key. The indicator light on the dash willflash rapidly for 10 seconds if the vehicle has been unlocked with the remote and the drivers door is opened if the battery in remote is getting low

you've got a bad wheel speed sensor or corresponding tone ring. take it to a dealer. they'll hook it up to a computer and tell you which sensor or tone ring it is and give you an estimate. you only pay for the hour of diag.

It sounds like there is a fault with the automatic transmission. you need to go to the dealer to plug in the tester and see what the problem is. All you can do is check the oil level, that is , if there is a dipstick and not a plug on the side of the transmission.

I'm guessing that the gearbox speed sensor was damaged in the shunt, this can happen if the gearbox was in park when it happened - causes internal damage to quite a lot of components. The speed sensor tells the gearbox the speed of the input shaft and the transmission control computer then signals the gearbox to change gear accordingly. If this is damaged it could account for the symptoms. Suggest taking to a LR dealer for diagnosis, they should pick up any sensor faults with their plug in diagnosis tools. Whilst it will cost a bit, it will save you a lot of component changing and there are a lot of components to change on a Disco!
