Run the fault codes and check for TCM problem. If it shifts into neutral like you describe then the engine would increase in rpms as the load came off. More than likely shifting into a too high gear which indicates a selector program problem.

and the clutch allows me to start car.
on Automatics trans must be in park or neutral to crank engine.

IS THAT IT, stalls means engine RPM is 0
and right foot actions are dead.
and all dash lamps glow, telling you STALL is now.
When was the last time the transmission fluid and filter changed? I would have that serviced first. If it is an electronic transmission, the line pressure might also have to be reset.
The transmission control module is expensive and if the valve body solenoids went bad, then you didn't get a raw deal. Labor, parts and fluid are about right price wise.
You could not fix it on your own without a lot of tools and knowledge of the transmission.
3speed or 4 speed? does it slip or just not shift. Might be old seals or a bad governor. Try using lubegard trans additive. Try that for a week if it doesn't work, replace the governor valve.
