SOURCE: Hi my 1999 audi a3 petrol stopped the oil light
Mr. WHISTON, for getting a clear understanding,if you received the oil light after the vehicle stopped it is obvious as the engine stop running and also with it you should have also the red battery light (charging light ). If so,and the reason is the fuel run out, after you put 5 liters in it which for me even is low quantity for the car,and tried to start it and will not kick, most common fault of the car is either the fuel pump stopped working due to low fuel and I believe is not the first time ( if I am right ) that you left it working with low fuel.If so the fuel pump on the attempt to feed your engine with the correct amount of needing fuel and due to low amount in tank was forced as working with sucking air and fuel at the same time, and slowly-slowly a friction was in progress inside the pump where it came to the limit so as to seized. To confirm if this is the fault, remove the back seat of your car and you will find the fuel pump location,on the right side and there is a black metallic cover with some screws by removing them you will find the top side of the pump with the plastic pipes and wiring connectors. Do not remove anything, Just ask somebody to turn the ignition on whilst you are standing by the pump side very close just to hear if is working sound like " BZZZ...... ) If so then the pump is ok ,if not then is better to call your mechanic to do the job for you as is a bit complicated to do it your self. If the pump is working then you have to check if the fuel filter some models do have it under the fuel tank or close to the engine under the body. Possible the fuel filter blogged. Try with what I advised you to do but be a very careful person as you are working with a flammable substance.
